Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Morning broke over the Catskills in brilliant streaks of amber and rose gold.

The rain had stopped. Fog curled up from the pine-covered valleys as Mark and Clara emerged from the forest road onto the highway. Mark’s truck was destroyed, but he had supported Clara for the two-mile hike down the mountain trail just as the facility collapsed inward with a subterranean thud that shook the highway pavement.

Down on Route 28, a convoy of emergency vehicles was arriving.

Dozens of state police cruisers, FBI tactical response units, and ambulances lined the roadway, their sirens echoing off the granite cliffs.

Leading the convoy was Detective Miller, his unmarked sedan skidding to a halt on the shoulder.

Miller stepped out, his jaw dropping as he saw the two figures walking out of the tree line. He threw his toothpick to the ground and broke into a dead sprint.

"Clara..." Miller whispered as he reached them, stripping off his heavy trench coat and draping it gently around the shivering woman's shoulders. "Mother of God... Vance, you actually found her."

"Arthur is back there," Mark said, his voice raw, his body running on fumes. "Buried under thirty tons of concrete in the research bunker. Send a recovery team if you want to put him in a courtroom, or leave him in the vault he built."

FBI agents quickly swarmed the area, securing Clara and escorting her toward an awaiting ambulance. Paramedics immediately swarmed her with blankets, oxygen masks, and IV fluids.

Miller turned to Mark, placing a heavy hand on his uninjured shoulder. "Brenda broke. She gave up the offshore bank accounts, the safe houses, the names of three state judges on Arthur's payroll. It’s over, Mark. The whole operation is coming down."

"My daughter," Mark said, his knees finally buckling under the crushing weight of forty-eight hours of adrenaline. "Take me to Lily."

"Right now," Miller said, catching Mark before he hit the asphalt and guiding him to his squad car. "Let’s bring this family home."
