Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The air in the grand foyer was thick with tension, heavy enough to suffocate a man. Richard
Sterling remained flat on his back, his expensive Italian leather shoes twitching slightly as his
brain struggled to process the reality standing before him. Victoria Sterling—his wife, his equal,
and the secret architect behind half of Sterling Global's most lucrative pharmaceutical patents—
was alive. She was standing right there, looking down at him with an expression of profound
disappointment and chilling composure.
'You... you died,' Richard muttered, scrambling backward on his elbows like a cornered animal,
completely forgetting the dignity demanded of a billionaire executive. 'The Coast Guard report...
the wreckage... it was confirmed! You were on that yacht when it exploded!'
Victoria did not blink. She slowly unbuttoned her trench coat, letting it drape slightly over her
shoulders before stepping further into the light. 'Did you truly believe that a poorly orchestrated
explosion off the coast of Monaco could permanently silence me, Richard?' Her voice was low,
smooth, and laced with a venomous calm that made Richard’s spine turn to ice. 'You outsourced
the hit to men who lacked discretion, and you buried the forensic audit files in offshore shell
companies in the Caymans. Did you honestly think I wouldn't keep backups?'
James stood up slowly, keeping little Lily tucked safely behind his right leg. He looked at his older
brother with utter disdain. 'You always underestimated her, Richard. Just like you
underestimated me when you forged our father’s signature to push me out of the company.'
'Shut up, James! This is a family matter!' Richard snarled, finally managing to scramble to his
feet, smoothing down his rumpled suit jacket in a desperate attempt to regain his lost authority.
He pointed a trembling finger at Victoria. 'You abandoned your home! You faked your own
disappearance to frame me! I have been running this company alone, keeping our stocks afloat
while dealing with the grief of losing—'
'Grief?' Victoria cut him off, a sharp, humorless laugh escaping her lips. 'You filed for sole custody
of our daughter and initiated emergency corporate restructuring to strip my voting shares within
forty-eight hours of the news reaching the press, Richard. Do not talk to me about grief. You wore
mourning clothes like an actor on a poorly funded stage, all while liquidating my personal assets
to fund your secret acquisition of Vanguard Tech.'
Lily clutched the hem of James’s jacket, looking back and forth between her parents. She didn't
understand corporate restructuring or offshore shell companies, but she understood the cold,
terrifying fury radiating from her father and the serene, protective warmth emanating from her
mother and uncle. 'Mommy, don't let him yell,' Lily whispered softly.

Victoria’s gaze softened instantly as she looked down at her daughter. The icy corporate titan
melted into a mother in a fraction of a second. She knelt down on the marble floor, opening her
arms wide. 'Come here, my sweet angel. Mommy is right here. No one will ever hurt you again.'
Lily didn't hesitate a second longer. She broke away and ran straight into her mother’s arms,
burying her face in Victoria's shoulder. Victoria held her tightly, kissing the top of her head while
glaring over Lily’s small back directly into Richard’s eyes. 'Your reign of terror in this house and
in the boardroom ends today, Richard. Pack your things. We are taking back what is ours.'
