Chapter 8 - The Trial of Richard Sterling

The federal courtroom was packed to capacity. Flashbulbs popped outside the courthouse steps
as journalists and camera crews clamored for a glimpse of the fallen corporate titan. Inside, the
trial of the United States versus Richard Sterling had reached its dramatic climax.
The prosecution presented an airtight case: forensic digital logs, recorded phone conversations,
bank transfer slips from Panama, and the damning testimony of co-conspirators. Richard sat at
the defense table, his tailored suit now replaced orange jumpsuit, his hair unstyled, looking
every bit of his years.
When the judge invited the defense to present closing arguments, Richard’s court-appointed
attorney merely offered a brief plea for leniency, citing mental stress and corporate pressure.
Then, the judge asked if the defendant wished to speak.
Slowly, Richard stood up. He looked across the courtroom, his eyes briefly meeting James’s steady
gaze, and then toward the back where Victoria sat quietly, holding little Lily in her lap (who was
safely shielded from the direct proceedings by family friends).
'I... I have nothing to say in my defense,' Richard muttered, his voice cracking, devoid of its
former arrogance. 'I let greed blind me. I destroyed my family, betrayed my brother, and thought
I was invincible. I accept whatever judgment this court decrees.'
The jury deliberated for less than forty minutes. The verdict was unanimous: guilty on all counts
of fraud, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice. The judge sentenced Richard Sterling to fourteen
years in federal prison without the possibility of parole for the first eight.
As the bailiffs led him away in handcuffs, Richard cast one final, regretful look back—a silent
acknowledgment of everything he had thrown away for the illusion of absolute power.
