Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

The executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of Sterling Tower hummed with tense
anticipation. The mahogany conference table, polished to a mirror finish, reflected the overcast
New York skyline outside. Board members—men and women in tailored suits who had silently
watched Richard consolidate power over the past six months—murmured nervously among
themselves.
The double doors swung open, and Richard Sterling strode in, flanked by two corporate
attorneys. His face was a mask of cold arrogance, though a subtle twitch in his left eye betrayed
the sleepless night he had endured following Victoria’s shocking return. 'Gentlemen,' Richard
announced, taking his seat at the head of the table. 'I call this emergency session to order. There
have been unauthorized rumors—malicious falsehoods—circulating regarding company
leadership. I assure you, Sterling Global remains entirely under my stable—'
'Save your breath, Richard,' a crisp, commanding voice echoed from the doorway.
All heads turned. Victoria Sterling walked in, impeccably dressed in a charcoal-grey Chanel suit,
her stride confident and purposeful. Behind her walked James Sterling, carrying a thick leather
briefcase, followed by a federal securities investigator and two senior partners from the firm's
primary legal counsel.
Richard sprang to his feet, his chair screeching against the floor. 'You have no right to be here!
You are legally dead, Victoria! Your shares were absorbed into my blind trust!'
Victoria calmly took a seat directly across from him—not in an ordinary chair, but in the
permanent Vice-Chair position that Richard had spent six months trying to dissolve. She opened
a sleek leather folder and placed her hands flat on the table.
'Section 4, Paragraph B of the Sterling Global founding charter clearly states that in the event of
an unverified disappearance, spousal shares remain in a protective holding trust for a period of
twenty-four months before any probate action can occur,' Victoria stated clearly, her voice
carrying effortlessly across the silent room. 'Furthermore, federal investigators have just
executed search warrants on your personal accounts, Richard. Insider trading, falsification of
corporate records, and obstruction of justice carry mandatory federal prison sentences.'
One of the senior board members, an elderly man named Arthur Vance who had known their
father, adjusted his glasses and leaned forward. 'Is this true, Richard? Have you been siphoning
R&D funds to shell companies?'

'It's a conspiracy! They are fabricating evidence!' Richard screamed, losing all composure,
slamming his fists onto the mahogany table. 'Security! Remove them from the building
immediately!'
No security guards entered. Instead, the head of corporate security stepped into the doorway,
holding a federal badge. 'Mr. Sterling, you are requested to accompany us for questioning
regarding financial irregularities.'
Richard stared around the room, realizing with mounting horror that every single ally he had
bought, bribed, or manipulated over the years had suddenly vanished into thin air. Victoria
looked across the table, her expression devoid of pity. 'Your empire was built on sand, Richard.
And the tide has finally come in.'
