Chapter 7 - Shadows and Whispers

Though justice was being served in the courts and boardrooms, the transition was not entirely
without turbulence. Whispers lingered in the high-society circles of Manhattan. Some old
associates of Richard, who had benefited from his illicit schemes, attempted to quietly distance
themselves or sell off their holdings to destabilize the company's stock.
One evening, as Victoria worked late in her executive office, a discreet knock sounded at her
door. It was Marcus Vance, Arthur's ambitious grandson and a junior vice president in the
acquisitions department, holding a confidential dossier.
'Excuse me, Ms. Sterling,' Marcus said cautiously, stepping inside. 'I found some encrypted files
hidden deep within the legacy server architecture—files that Richard’s legal team tried to wipe
before the federal raid.'
Victoria looked up from her desk, her eyes narrowing slightly. 'What kind of files, Marcus?'
'Third-party contracts involving foreign shell companies that weren't listed in the initial SEC
audit,' Marcus explained, placing the folder on her desk. 'It appears Richard was planning a
hostile takeover of a rival biomedical firm using embezzled pension funds.'
Victoria opened the folder, scanning the financial instruments and digital signatures. Her
expression hardened, but she didn't panic. 'Thank you, Marcus. You did the right thing by
bringing this directly to me rather than trying to handle it internally.'
'Of course, Ms. Sterling. Integrity matters,' Marcus replied respectfully before turning to leave.
Victoria closed the folder and picked up her desk phone, dialing direct to Agent Miller. The web
Richard had spun was even wider than they initially thought, but every thread he left behind
only served to strengthen her resolve to cleanse the corporation from top to bottom.
