Chapter 15 - THE FINAL ACCOUNT

The investigators located Evelyn's offshore account.
It contained billions.
Not stolen from one company.
From dozens.
Hospitals.
Foundations.
Small businesses.
Families.
The money had been moved through a network that existed for decades.
Ethan's father was only one piece.
Victor was another.
Rebecca was a weapon.
Evelyn was the architect.
But one name remained unknown.
The account's final beneficiary was listed only as THE TRUSTEE.
Marcus studied the records.
“Someone is still controlling everything.”
Ethan asked,
“Can we identify them?”
“Not yet.”
Vanessa remembered the old photograph.
The man standing beside Victor.
She enlarged it.
Then she recognized the building behind them.
It wasn't the hotel.
It was a private banking facility.
She knew the name.
“The trustee is there.”
They traveled under federal protection.
Inside the bank, investigators demanded access to the records.
The manager refused.
Then Marcus presented the letter from Vanessa's mother.
The manager's face changed.
“You have no idea what that means.”
“Tell us.”
He sat down.
“The trustee has been receiving payments for twenty-five years.”
“Who?”
The manager hesitated.
Then he whispered a name.
Ethan's breath stopped.
It was his mother.
Vanessa stared.
“That can't be.”
The manager explained.
Ethan's mother had created the account before her death.
But she had not used it to steal money.
She had used it to hide evidence.
The account was a vault.
Not a criminal operation.
Everything they needed to expose the network was inside.
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“My mother was protecting us.”
Marcus nodded.
“She was.”
Then the manager opened the final file.
It contained one recording.
Ethan's mother appeared on screen.
“If you're watching this, they failed to silence me.”
She looked directly into the camera.
“And if Vanessa is with you, tell her I was proud of her.”
Vanessa began crying.

Then Ethan's mother said something that changed everything.
“Evelyn was never acting alone.”
