Chapter 18 - LEARNING TO LIVE AGAIN

A year passed.
The mansion was sold.
Ethan and Vanessa moved into a smaller home.
They wanted windows.
Sunlight.
Open doors.
A place that didn't feel like a fortress.
Lily planted flowers in the backyard.
Marcus opened a security consulting company.
Daniel donated much of his inheritance to charities damaged by the financial network.
Ethan created a foundation in his mother's name.
Vanessa became its director.
They helped families who had been victims of financial abuse.
But healing was not perfect.
Some nights Lily still woke frightened.
Some mornings Vanessa struggled to enter a room with closed doors.
Ethan never told her to forget.
He simply stayed.
One evening, Lily asked Vanessa,
“Are you happy now?”
Vanessa smiled.
“Yes.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
Lily thought for a moment.
“Even after everything?”
Vanessa looked at Ethan.
“Especially after everything.”
Ethan smiled.
Later that night, he and Vanessa sat outside.
“I owe you an apology,” he said.
“For what?”
“For every time I made you feel alone.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“You've apologized.”
“I know.”
“Then why again?”
“Because I finally understand.”
She leaned against him.
“I don't need you to be perfect.”
“I know.”
“I need you to believe me.”
“I do.”
A long silence followed.
Then Ethan reached into his pocket.
Vanessa raised an eyebrow.
“Another promise?”
He smiled.
“This one is different.”
He handed her a small key.
“What is it?”
“The key to our new house.”
She laughed.
“You already gave me one.”
“This one is symbolic.”
“Of what?”
“You're not a guest in my life.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“You're my home.”
She kissed him.
Inside, Lily laughed.
May you like
The sound carried through the open windows.
And for the first time, Vanessa didn't fear what tomorrow would bring.
