Chapter 8 - THE TRIAL BEGINS

Three months later, the courtroom was packed.
News organizations surrounded the courthouse.
Rebecca had become a national story.
The wealthy socialite who had allegedly manipulated a powerful family.
The woman who had attacked a child.
The woman connected to a financial conspiracy.
Ethan sat beside Vanessa.
Lily remained with a family counselor.
Marcus was scheduled to testify.
Rebecca entered the courtroom without looking at anyone.
She appeared calm.
Too calm.
Her attorney whispered something to her.
She smiled.
Vanessa noticed.
“What is she planning?”
Ethan shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Marcus took the stand.
He described the financial network.
He described his disappearance.
Then he described Rebecca.
“She wasn't simply following orders.”
The prosecutor asked,
“What do you mean?”
“She enjoyed having control.”
Rebecca's expression changed.
Marcus continued.
“She wanted Ethan isolated.”
The prosecutor displayed photographs.
Emails appeared on the screen.
Messages between Rebecca and Ethan's father.
Then came the recording from the apartment.
Rebecca's own voice filled the courtroom.
Vanessa watched silently.
Lily had been protected.
The truth was finally public.
But Rebecca's attorney stood.
He argued that the recording did not prove the entire story.
Then he introduced a surprise witness.
Ethan's father.
The courtroom erupted in whispers.
Ethan stared.
His father walked slowly to the witness stand.
He looked older than Ethan remembered.
The prosecutor asked,
“Did you authorize Rebecca to manipulate your son?”
“No.”
“Did you know about the financial transfers?”
“No.”
Rebecca suddenly laughed.
Her father looked toward her.
Rebecca's smile disappeared.
The prosecutor produced a final document.
A handwritten letter.
Signed by Ethan's father.
The room became silent.
It contained instructions.
Names.
Accounts.
And one sentence that destroyed his defense.
If Vanessa becomes a problem, remove her from the family.
Ethan looked at his father.
The man lowered his eyes.
Vanessa took Ethan's hand.
He whispered,
May you like
“It's over.”
But across the courtroom, Rebecca was smiling again.
