Chapter 3 - THE FIRE BEHIND THE WALLSRichard threw his shoulder against the archive door.

It did not move.

Smoke thickened rapidly, rolling through the gap beneath the bookcase. Chloe coughed while Mia pulled a curtain from the wall and pressed it over her sister’s mouth.

“Is there another exit?” Richard asked.

Margaret searched the cabinets.

“Mrs. Isabel once mentioned a service passage, but I never saw it.”

Flames crackled beyond the hidden door.

Richard swept files from the desk and searched beneath it. His hand found a metal lever attached to the wall.

He pulled.

A section of shelving shifted open, revealing a narrow brick tunnel.

“Go!”

Margaret entered first, followed by Chloe and Mia. Richard grabbed the flash drive and Isabel’s wooden box before following them into the darkness.

The tunnel descended through the walls and ended behind the greenhouse. By the time they emerged, flames had reached the west-wing windows.

Fire trucks arrived minutes later.

Richard watched firefighters rush toward the mansion while police officers secured the grounds. His head of security, Daniel Cross, approached wearing an expression of practiced concern.

“Sir, we believe an electrical fault caused the fire.”

Richard looked at him.

“You reached that conclusion quickly.”

Daniel hesitated.

“We found damaged wiring.”

“Before the firefighters entered?”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Richard handed the flash drive to Marcus, who had arrived from the courthouse.

“Make three copies,” he whispered. “Send one to the federal prosecutor.”

Marcus concealed it inside his coat.

Across the lawn, Mia noticed Malcolm Price standing near the emergency vehicles. He was speaking to a police captain.

When he saw her watching, he smiled.

Not nervously.

Confidently.

By evening, most of the fire had been extinguished. The archive was destroyed, but the flames had not reached the main house.

Richard called an emergency meeting in the drawing room.

Malcolm, Daniel, Marcus, Margaret, Mia, and Chloe stood before him.

“I want to know who entered the west wing,” Richard said.

Daniel opened a tablet.

“The cameras malfunctioned thirty minutes before the fire.”

“That is convenient.”

Malcolm adjusted his tie.

“Richard, this has been an emotional day. Perhaps you should rest before making accusations.”

Richard turned toward him.

“My wife appeared in Isabel’s hidden archive with you.”

Malcolm’s expression remained calm.

“That would be impossible. I never knew the room existed.”

“You were recorded.”

Richard expected fear.

Instead, Malcolm laughed.

“You found the video.”

Daniel drew the curtains.

The room fell silent.

Marcus stepped closer to Richard.

“What is this?”

Malcolm sat in Richard’s chair.

“For years, you enjoyed the benefits of an empire built by people far more ruthless than you. Yet you convinced yourself the Vance fortune came from kindness.”

“My father built this company.”

“Your father stole it.”

Richard stared at him.

Malcolm continued.

“The Halcyon merger will return those assets to their rightful owners.”

“Who are they?”

“You’ll meet them tomorrow.”

Daniel removed his security badge and placed it on the desk.

Richard understood the truth.

The estate was already compromised.

Malcolm had controlled the accounts.

Daniel had controlled the gates.

Evelyn had controlled Richard’s trust.

“You murdered Isabel,” Richard said.

Malcolm’s smile weakened.

“I didn’t touch her car.”

“But you know who did.”

Before Malcolm could answer, police sirens sounded outside.

Two detectives entered the drawing room.

“Richard Vance?” one asked.

“Yes.”

“We have a warrant to search the estate and seize all electronic records connected to the Vance Children’s Foundation.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“On what grounds?”

The detective handed him the warrant.

Marcus read the document and went pale.

The warrant alleged that Richard had created fraudulent accounts, forced Evelyn to authorize transfers, and assaulted her when she threatened to expose him.

“This evidence is fabricated,” Marcus said.

Malcolm rose.

“Then Mr. Vance has nothing to fear.”

The detectives began removing computers.

Richard could not stop them without appearing guilty.

Mia watched Malcolm walk toward the door.

Something about his posture reminded her of the video from the archive. Yet there was another detail she could not ignore.

The gold ring on his hand carried the same symbol as the pendant her mother had worn every day of her life.

A circle crossed by three lines.

Mia grabbed his wrist.

“Where did you get that ring?”

Malcolm pulled away.

“Don’t touch me.”

“My mother had that symbol.”

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

He looked at Chloe, then Mia.

“You were supposed to die with Elena.”

Richard lunged toward him, but the detectives intervened.

Malcolm left the room beneath police protection.

Later that night, Marcus discovered that the court order required Richard to appear before the board at nine the next morning.

If the directors voted against him, he would lose control of the estate, the foundation, and every clinic his family owned.

Mia sat in the darkened kitchen with Chloe.

“I remember the ring,” she said. “Mom kept a photograph hidden behind it.”

“Of whom?”

Mia removed the lining from their mother’s old purse, which she had kept since the funeral.

A tiny photograph slipped out.

It showed Elena standing beside Malcolm Price.

Between them was a man Mia had never seen.

On the back, her mother had written:

Thomas Torres. My husband. Father of my daughters. Murdered by the Vances.

Chloe stared at the man’s face.

Then the kitchen door opened.

The Vance chauffeur entered slowly.

He removed his cap.

Chloe looked from the photograph to the chauffeur.

They were the same man.

Their father was alive.

And he had been living inside Richard’s estate for eight months.
