Chapter 9 - THE HEIRS HIDDEN IN THE SERVANTS’ WINGRichard demanded a DNA test.
The results arrived forty-eight hours later.
Elena Torres had been the biological daughter of Arthur Vance, Richard’s father. Arthur had fathered her before his marriage and secretly supported her education.
Richard and Elena were half-siblings.
Mia and Chloe were Arthur’s granddaughters.
But Evelyn’s statement about Richard was only partly true.
Richard was Arthur’s legal son but not his biological child. Richard’s mother had been pregnant when she married Arthur. Arthur knew and raised Richard as his own.
Julian, however, was Arthur’s biological son.
That explained Julian’s obsession with reclaiming the estate.
It also revealed why Arthur had created a hidden provision inside the family trust.
The controlling shares were to pass not to his sons, but to the descendants of his eldest biological child.
Elena.
After Elena’s death, those rights passed to Mia and Chloe.
For years, Julian had believed Richard controlled the estate.
In truth, the young women he treated as disposable maids were the legal owners of the Vance Foundation.
The final hearing attracted national attention.
Julian entered federal court in handcuffs. Marcus sat beside his own defense attorney. Malcolm had agreed to testify in exchange for a reduced sentence.
Evelyn entered last.
She wore no diamonds and no designer clothes. Her plain gray suit made her look smaller, but her expression remained difficult to read.
The prosecutor presented Elena’s ledger, Isabel’s recordings, hotel surveillance, and the uploaded account records.
Marcus tried to discredit the evidence.
He claimed Evelyn had manipulated everyone and fabricated the recordings to protect herself.
Evelyn took the witness stand.
Richard expected her to lie.
Mia expected revenge.
Instead, Evelyn confessed.
She admitted marrying Richard under Julian’s instructions. She admitted stealing from the foundation, abusing staff members, falsifying financial records, and helping frame Richard.
Then the prosecutor asked whether she had arranged Isabel’s death.
Evelyn’s voice weakened.
“I disabled the estate’s security cameras that evening.”
“Why?”
“Marcus said he needed to speak privately with Isabel.”
“Did you know he intended to harm her?”
“I suspected it.”
“Yet you helped him.”
“Yes.”
Marcus shouted from the defense table.
Evelyn turned toward him.
“You left me in that cellar to take the blame. Now you can share it.”
Malcolm confirmed that Marcus had paid a mechanic to sabotage Isabel’s vehicle. Thomas authenticated Elena’s ledger. Lena verified the digital evidence.
The judge dismissed all charges against Richard.
Julian, Marcus, Daniel, and Malcolm were ordered to remain in custody pending trial.
Evelyn’s sentencing was postponed because of her cooperation, but she still faced years in prison.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Mia and Chloe.
“Will you take control of the Vance Foundation?”
“Will Richard remain chairman?”
“Do you forgive Evelyn?”
Mia did not answer.
Chloe looked toward Richard.
For the first time, he seemed uncertain around them.
The mansion, company, and foundation were legally theirs.
Richard had protected them, but his blindness had also allowed Evelyn’s cruelty to continue.
That evening, they returned to the estate.
The staff gathered in the same kitchen where the vase had shattered.
Mia stood beside the marble island.
“This house will no longer belong to one family,” she announced. “A percentage of the estate will be placed into an employee trust.”
The cook began crying.
Margaret covered her mouth.
Chloe turned toward Richard.
“We want you to remain chairman.”
Richard looked stunned.
“But every major financial decision will require independent oversight,” Chloe continued. “No more secrets. No more private kingdoms.”
Richard nodded.
“That is fair.”
Thomas stood near the doorway, unsure whether he belonged.
Chloe approached him.
“I am not ready to call you Dad.”
“I understand.”
“But you can stay for dinner.”
Thomas’s eyes filled with tears.
It was not forgiveness.
It was a beginning.
Later that night, Mia entered Isabel’s restored archive. Among the objects recovered from the fire was the broken base of the crystal vase.
She examined it beneath a lamp.
The silver key had been hidden inside, but the vase contained another compartment.
Mia opened it.
A second flash drive fell onto the desk.
The label read:
FOR EVELYN ONLY.
Mia inserted it into the computer.
Isabel appeared on the screen.
“Evelyn,” she said, “if you are seeing this, then you finally betrayed Julian. But before you ask Richard for forgiveness, you must tell him what happened to his mother.”
Richard stood in the doorway behind Mia.
His face went white.
“My mother died when I was six.”
