Chapter 5 - THE BROTHER WHO STOLE A NAMEJulian dropped the lighter.

Thomas kicked the steel box toward Mia as flames raced across the floor.
Richard charged at his brother, but Julian stepped backward and slammed the apartment door. A metal bar fell across it from the outside.
Fire climbed the wallpaper.
Chloe pulled the curtains down while Marcus smashed a chair against the window.
They were three stories above the alley.
“There’s a fire escape,” Thomas shouted.
“It collapsed years ago,” Mia replied.
Smoke filled the ceiling.
Richard searched the steel box and found several thick contracts. He shoved them beneath his coat.
Thomas tore the sink pipe from the wall, flooding the kitchen floor. Together, they soaked the curtains and pushed through the burning doorway into the hall.
The front stairwell was blocked.
Margaret remembered an old service staircase at the rear of the building. They reached it moments before the kitchen ceiling collapsed.
Outside, Julian was gone.
Firefighters arrived, but half the apartment was destroyed.
The ledger survived.
So did Isabel’s letter.
Richard stood beneath the emergency lights, staring at the childhood photograph.
“My father told me Julian drowned when he was seventeen.”
Thomas shook his head.
“Your father paid him to disappear.”
“Why?”
“Julian had been stealing from the family company. He forged medical contracts, threatened employees, and caused a patient’s death by cutting costs at one of your father’s clinics.”
Richard remembered his father’s silence whenever Julian’s name was mentioned.
“He created Halcyon?”
“After he disappeared, he used different identities. Malcolm helped him hide the profits.”
“And Evelyn?”
Thomas looked toward Mia and Chloe.
“She was recruited because she could get close to you.”
Richard thought of the charity gala where he first met Evelyn. She had appeared compassionate, intelligent, and fascinated by his foundation work.
Every meeting had been planned.
Every tender word had been part of an assignment.
Marcus opened the ledger.
Elena had recorded payments to judges, doctors, journalists, and board members. Several entries carried Julian’s initials.
J.V.
There was also a list of witnesses who had died in accidents.
Isabel Vance.
Elena Torres.
And Thomas Torres, whose death had been faked.
At the bottom was one unfinished entry.
Mia Torres — pending.
Chloe Torres — pending.
Mia stared at the words.
“We weren’t hired by accident.”
“No,” Thomas said. “Evelyn placed the job advertisement where she knew you would see it.”
“Why bring us into the estate?”
“To locate the ledger. She thought your mother might have told you where it was.”
Chloe looked sick.
“Every question she asked about our childhood…”
“She was searching for clues,” Mia finished.
Richard placed a hand over the ledger.
“We take this directly to federal authorities.”
Marcus made the call.
An agent agreed to meet them at an abandoned field office outside the city. They drove separately to reduce the risk of being followed.
Halfway there, police vehicles surrounded Richard’s car.
Officers ordered him onto the road.
The warrant accused him of arson, destruction of evidence, and conspiracy to steal foundation funds.
Someone had uploaded edited security footage showing Richard entering the west wing with a fuel container.
“It’s fake,” Mia shouted.
The officers handcuffed him.
Marcus demanded access to a judge, but the police had instructions to transport Richard immediately.
As they placed him in the patrol car, Richard looked at Mia.
“Protect the ledger.”
The convoy drove away.
Marcus led the others to a motel outside town. He hid the ledger inside an air vent and began contacting federal prosecutors.
At midnight, Chloe disappeared.
Her bed was empty.
The window was open.
On her pillow rested Richard’s missing chairman’s seal, covered in blood.
Mia’s phone rang.
She answered with shaking hands.
Chloe’s voice whispered through the speaker.
“Mia, don’t call the police.”
“Where are you?”
“I don’t know. They covered my eyes.”
“Who took you?”
A man spoke in the background.
Chloe began crying.
Then she forced out three words.
“Dad helped them.”
The call ended.
Mia turned.
Thomas stood in the motel doorway.
His coat was wet from the rain.

In one hand, he carried Chloe’s silver bracelet.
In the other, he held the motel’s master key.
