Chapter 4 - THE FATHER WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEADChloe knocked over her chair.

The chauffeur raised both hands.
“My name is Thomas,” he said. “And yes, I am your father.”
Mia could not move.
Their mother had told them Thomas died before Chloe was born. They had grown up with a single photograph, a grave marker without a body, and a mother who refused to discuss the past.
“You watched us work here,” Chloe whispered. “You heard Evelyn insult us.”
“I was trying to keep you alive.”
“She hit us.”
“I know.”
“And you did nothing.”
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“I needed Evelyn to believe I was loyal.”
Chloe crossed the room and struck him across the face.
Thomas accepted it without protest.
“You don’t get to call yourself our father.”
Richard entered with Marcus and Margaret.
He looked between Thomas and the photograph.
“Explain everything.”
Thomas removed his chauffeur’s jacket.
A scar crossed the length of his forearm.
“Twenty-three years ago, Elena and I worked for Halcyon Medical. We discovered the company was billing the government for treatments never provided. When we threatened to expose it, Malcolm arranged my death.”
“The grave?” Mia asked.
“An unidentified body was buried under my name. Malcolm told Elena that if she questioned it, you girls would disappear.”
“Why did she later work for Isabel?” Richard asked.
“Your wife found Elena and offered protection. Together, they traced Halcyon’s money into the Vance Foundation.”
Richard looked toward the burned west wing.
“Isabel never told me.”
“She believed someone close to you was involved.”
“Who?”
Thomas hesitated.
Before he could answer, headlights swept across the kitchen windows.
A convoy of black vehicles entered the estate.
The emergency board session had been moved forward.
Malcolm arrived with six directors, Evelyn, and a court-appointed administrator.
Evelyn wore a white suit and dark glasses. Makeup concealed the bruises she claimed Richard had caused.
She entered the drawing room as though returning to a stage.
“Richard,” she said softly. “You look tired.”
“You will not remain here.”
“The court disagrees.”
The administrator presented an order granting Evelyn temporary occupancy of the estate. Because Richard was under investigation and the mansion belonged to a corporate trust, the board could appoint an interim resident to protect company assets.
Evelyn smiled at Mia and Chloe.
“Pack your things.”
Richard turned to the directors.
“You are placing an accused thief in control of financial records.”
Malcolm opened a folder.
“The audit you mentioned contains no verified signature. The only person claiming Evelyn stole money is you.”
“My attorney has copies.”
Marcus checked his phone.
The files he had sent to the prosecutor were gone.
His email account had been breached.
Malcolm placed another document on the table.
“We also have medical reports questioning Richard’s judgment.”
Richard read the report.
A psychiatrist he had never met claimed he suffered from paranoia, delusions, and violent episodes.
The directors voted.
Nine supported Richard’s temporary removal.
Three opposed it.
The chairman’s seal was taken from his desk.
Evelyn accepted it from Malcolm.
“Thank you,” she said.
Richard was given one hour to leave.
The staff gathered in the foyer as he descended the staircase with a single suitcase. Many were crying, but Daniel’s security officers prevented them from approaching.
Mia and Chloe stood beside Thomas.
Evelyn pointed toward the front door.
“The maids leave too.”
“They are witnesses in an active investigation,” Marcus said.
“They are trespassers.”
Richard faced Evelyn.
“You planned this before the vase broke.”
“The vase simply gave me an opportunity.”
“You planted Isabel’s key.”
Evelyn leaned closer.
“I needed you to find the archive and destroy whatever remained inside. The fire should have solved everything.”
“Malcolm tried to kill us.”
Evelyn’s gaze moved toward Mia.
“Malcolm is careless. I would never kill anyone inside my own house.”
The words carried a terrifying implication.
She had considered killing them somewhere else.
Outside the gates, Richard, Marcus, Margaret, Thomas, Mia, and Chloe gathered beside two vehicles.
Everything Richard owned now stood behind iron bars controlled by his enemies.
“We need the original ledger,” Thomas said. “Elena hid it before she died.”
“Where?” Mia asked.
“She never told me. But Isabel believed it was somewhere no board member could reach.”
Mia remembered the small apartment where their mother had raised them. Elena had refused every offer to move, even when the building deteriorated.
“She hid it at home.”
They drove across the city.
Elena’s old apartment had been empty since Mia and Chloe left. The landlord planned to demolish the building the following month.
Inside, Mia searched the kitchen while Chloe opened cabinets and Thomas examined the floors.
Richard noticed that one wall sounded hollow.
Behind a loose panel, they found a steel box.
Mia used Isabel’s silver key.
Inside was a handwritten ledger, photographs, contracts, and a sealed envelope addressed to Richard.
His hands trembled as he opened it.
Richard, the person behind Halcyon is not Malcolm. Malcolm is only the accountant. Evelyn is only the door. The man controlling them carries your blood and your name.
Beneath the letter lay a photograph of Richard’s father with two boys.
One was Richard.
The other was his older brother, Julian.
Julian Vance had supposedly died in a boating accident twenty-nine years earlier.
A floorboard creaked behind them.
A tall man stood in the apartment doorway.
He had Richard’s eyes.

“Hello, little brother,” Julian said.
Then he raised a lighter over a trail of gasoline running through the room.
