Chapter 10 - The Unseen Watcher

Down by the cliffside service road, outside the perimeter of the Mercer gates, a black town car sat idling in the shadows.
Inside the back seat, Julian Harrington lowered his encrypted satellite phone, his face bathed in the red glow of a failed transmission loop. His Cayman accounts were locked. His sister was back in a Manhattan holding cell awaiting federal arraignment. The great, multi-million-dollar coup against the Mercer dynasty had collapsed into dust in less than forty-eight hours.
Julian stared up through the windshield at the distant, glittering lights of the main estate house.
He had studied Dominic Mercer for two years. He had mapped his psychology, analyzed his corporate weaknesses, and calculated every risk.
He had made only one fatal miscalculation.
He had forgotten that men like Dominic Mercer didn't build empires by trusting the people around them. They built them by waiting patiently in the dark, watching every move, until the trap finally snapped shut.
Julian pulled a silver flash drive from his pocket, looked at it for one long second, and then tossed it out the window into the wet ditch beside the road.

The town car shifted into gear, its tires hissing against the wet asphalt, disappearing into the cold New England night, leaving the Mercer estate standing silent, eternal, and completely unconquered.
