Chapter 6 - The Visitor at the Gate

By Friday afternoon, the estate looked like a royal movie set. Dozens of florists from Boston were stringing thousands of imported white orchids across the ballroom terrace. Valet stands were being erected near the main fountain, and trucks carrying industrial lighting and sound equipment rumbled up the private drive every twenty minutes.
Inside her suite, Brooke paced the floor, her phone pressed so hard against her ear that her hand hurt.
“Julian, answer your phone! Pick up!”
Straight to voicemail. Again.
Her brother had vanished off the grid since Thursday night. No replies to her texts, no encrypted signal pings, nothing. It was as if he had evaporated into thin air. Without Julian’s technical oversight, the second phase of the asset transfer—moving three million dollars from the Mercer holding shell into their offshore Cayman account—was completely stalled.
A sharp knock sounded at her door.
“Come in!” Brooke snapped, thinking it was the bridal consultant with the final fitting adjustments.
The door opened, but it wasn't the consultant.
It was Marcus, the head of Dominic’s personal security detail. He wore a crisp black suit, his dark glasses tucked into his breast pocket, his expression completely unreadable.
“Miss Harrington,” Marcus said formally. “Mr. Mercer requests your presence in the lower screening room.”
Brooke’s stomach plummeted. “The screening room? Why? I’m busy with the seating chart.”
“Mr. Mercer stated it was an urgent matter regarding the wedding preparations. Specifically, an unexpected guest who arrived from New York.”
A cold shiver ran down Brooke’s spine. New York? Julian lived in Manhattan. Had Julian finally shown up?
“Fine,” she muttered, grabbing a blazer to throw over her shoulders. “Lead the way.”
They descended past the main floors into the subterranean levels of the estate—past the wine cellars, past the secure server rooms, down into the reinforced vault corridor where Dominic kept his most sensitive corporate archives.
Marcus stopped in front of a heavy steel door marked ‘Conference Room B’. He swiped an electronic keycard, the heavy bolts retracted with a mechanical thud, and he pushed the door open.
“Inside, please.”
Brooke stepped across the threshold, her heels clicking sharply against the polished concrete floor.
The room was lit by a single overhead spotlight shining down onto a metal table in the center. Tied securely to a heavy iron chair beneath the light was a man.
Brooke screamed, stumbling backward until her spine hit the steel door.
It wasn't Julian.
It was Arthur Vance—the former chief compliance officer of Mercer Capital, a man who had mysteriously resigned and fled to Europe six months ago after being accused of embezzling four hundred thousand dollars from the corporate pension fund.
Arthur’s face was bruised, his expensive suit wrinkled and stained with sweat, a piece of gray duct tape dangling loose around his neck.
Dominic sat in a leather armchair just outside the spotlight's glare, a glass of amber whiskey in his hand. He looked up slowly as Brooke entered.
“Arthur,” Dominic said smoothly, swirling the ice in his glass. “Tell my fiancée what you told me about who authorized your offshore wire transfers.”
Arthur raised his head, his terrified eyes locking onto Brooke. He began to sob, a pathetic, high-pitched sound that echoed off the concrete walls.
“It was her!” Arthur shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at Brooke. “It was Miss Harrington! She said if I didn't falsify the internal audit reports and blame the shortfall on Natalie’s husband, she would leak my gambling debts to the board! She promised me a cut of the trust liquidation once she married into the family!”
Brooke’s breath came in short, jagged gasps. The room seemed to spin on its axis.
“He’s lying!” she screamed, her voice cracking with hysteria. “Dominic, you can't believe this criminal! He’s trying to save his own skin! He’s a thief!”
Dominic stood up slowly. He placed his glass down on the metal table, the sound ringing like a death knell in the quiet room. He walked over to Brooke, stopping just inches away.
“Arthur hasn't been a thief for six months, Brooke,” Dominic said softly. “He’s been living in a safe house in Zurich—funded by an anonymous Swiss bank account.”
Dominic reached into his suit jacket, pulled out a printed bank statement, and dropped it onto the table.

“An account registered under the maiden name of Brooke Harrington’s mother.”
