Chapter 4 - The Digital Anatomy of a Betrayal

Inside the study, the air smelled faintly of ozone and expensive cigar smoke—a smell Dominic hadn't left behind when he boarded the flight to London three days ago.

He didn't turn on the overhead lights. Instead, the pale blue glow of three massive curved monitors illuminated the room, casting long, skeletal shadows across the Persian rugs and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.

Dominic walked over to the antique mahogany desk. His laptop—a military-grade custom terminal—was plugged into the dock. On the screen, a terminal window was scrolling lines of compiled code at blinding speed.

*Data export in progress...*

*Destination: External IP Address (Cipher-locked relay, Zurich).*

*Percentage complete: 84%... 85%...*

Julian Harrington wasn't just a corporate lawyer with a taste for bespoke suits; he was a black-hat hacker who had managed to scrub a federal insider trading investigation off the DOJ servers back in 2023. And he had used his sister’s engagement to infiltrate the perimeter of Mercer Capital’s digital vault.

Dominic reached down, disconnected the hardwired ethernet cable with a sharp snap, and typed a twelve-digit master override command into the terminal.

*System Lockdown Initiated.*

*All external data streams severed.*

The scrolling text stopped instantly, replaced by a flashing red warning box: WARNING: COMPROMISE DETECTED ON NODE 4 (ESTATE TRUST ASSETS).

Dominic pulled out his encrypted satellite phone and dialed a direct extension. It rang once before a heavy, gruff voice answered.

“Boss? I thought you were touching down in Dover.”

“Cancel Dover, Marcus,” Dominic said, his voice flat and cold as a winter lake. “I’m sitting at my desk.”

A pause on the other end, heavy with sudden, military-grade tension. “We didn’t log an arrival, sir. The perimeter sensors—”

“The perimeter sensors were bypassed using a ghost-frequency transmitter plugged into the eastern gatehouse repeater,” Dominic interrupted. “Whoever did it knew the exact maintenance schedule of our signal repeaters. Which means they had internal help.”

“Who?” Marcus asked, his tone instantly shifting into tactical readiness.

“Julian Harrington. Check the security logs for the last seventy-two hours. Find out which member of the domestic staff signed out the maintenance keys for Sector Four.” Dominic leaned back in his leather chair, his eyes fixed on the frozen monitor. “And Marcus?”

“Sir?”

“Don't arrest anyone yet. Let them think they’re winning. A cornered rat doesn't show you its tunnels; it just bites. I want every single rat in this house out in the open before Saturday morning.”

“Understood. What about Miss Brooke?”

Dominic stared at the reflection of his own face in the darkened glass of the monitor. He thought of her honey-blond hair, her rehearsed tears, and the cold, predatory ambition hiding behind her wedding vows.

“Leave her to me,” Dominic whispered, and hung up.
