Chapter 8 - St. Jude’s Cathedral

St. Jude’s Cathedral in downtown Boston was breathtaking. The soaring Gothic arches, the stained-glass windows filtering brilliant shafts of ruby and gold sunlight, and the five hundred guests packed into the pews created an atmosphere of absolute majesty.

State senators sat in the front rows. Tech executives, media moguls, and society columnists murmured quietly among themselves, waiting for the bride.

At the altar, Dominic Mercer stood in a bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo. His face was carved from marble—impenetrable, calm, terrifyingly regal. Beside him stood his best man, Marcus, holding the velvet ring box with steady hands.

The organ music swelled, shifting into the traditional wedding march.

The heavy oak doors at the back of the cathedral swung open.

Brooke Harrington appeared.

She looked stunning. The Vera Wang gown hugged her slender figure, the twelve-foot lace veil trailed behind her like sea foam, and her makeup was flawless. But anyone looking closely at her eyes could see the stark, unadulterated terror hidden beneath her heavy lashes. Every step down the long aisle felt like walking to the electric chair.

The guests smiled and whispered, admiring the fairy-tale romance of the century.

Brooke reached the altar. Dominic didn't smile, but he extended his hand, taking her ice-cold fingers in his warm grasp.

The priest cleared his throat, opening the Bible. “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today—”

“Father,” Dominic’s voice rang out, clear, calm, and carrying effortlessly through the vaulted acoustics of the cathedral.

The priest blinked, pausing mid-sentence. “My son?”

Dominic turned to face the congregation. He didn't drop Brooke’s hand; instead, he raised it slightly, holding it up like an exhibit in a courtroom.

“Before we proceed with the vows,” Dominic said, his dark eyes sweeping across the sea of frozen faces in the pews, “there is a small administrative matter of asset disclosure that my bride neglected to share with the public.”

A ripple of nervous laughter broke out near the back. Someone whispered that it must be a billionaire’s pre-nuptial joke.

Dominic pressed a small wireless remote in his pocket.

Behind the altar, the massive stone wall where a traditional crucifix hung suddenly parted. A high-definition LED media screen slid down from the vaulted ceiling.

The congregation gasped.

On the screen, in crisp, glowing 4K resolution, was a recorded video feed from the Mercer estate security servers.

The audio began to play through the cathedral’s surround-sound system.

*“Sign the agreement, Natalie… or by breakfast tomorrow, you and your son can be off this property.”*

Brooke’s voice echoed off the sacred walls, crystal clear, venomous, and undeniable.

The whispers in the pews instantly died, replaced by a suffocating, dead silence.

The video shifted. Now it showed Arthur Vance in the subterranean screening room, detailing the embezzlement scheme, followed by bank routing numbers linking directly to Brooke’s offshore accounts.

Senator Vance, sitting in the third row, slowly stood up, his face turning the color of ash.

Dominic finally turned his gaze back to Brooke. Her fingers were trembling so violently in his grip that the diamond engagement ring rattled against her skin.

“You wanted my name, Brooke,” Dominic whispered, his voice dangerously soft. “You wanted my mother’s trust, my estate, and my legacy.”

Brooke’s knees buckled. If Dominic hadn't held her arm, she would have collapsed onto the stone floor of the cathedral in a heap of white lace.

“Dominic… please,” she choked out, tears finally breaking over her eyelashes, ruining her mascara. “Don't do this. We can talk about this at home. Please…”

Dominic leaned down, his lips brushing the shell of her ear.

“There is no home left for you, Brooke,” he said, his voice entirely devoid of human warmth. “And as for the wedding?”

He let go of her hand. She staggered backward, catching herself against the edge of the wooden altar.

Dominic turned to the stunned priest.
