Chapter 1 - Echoes in the RainThe clock on the wall read precisely 2:58 AM, but inside the penthouse, time felt entirely frozen. Outside, a violent storm lashed against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, mirroring the turbulent emotions raging inside the room.

Chloe stood frozen near the entryway, her chest heaving as tears cut clean paths through the dust and fatigue on her face. In her trembling hands, she clutched a pair of worn-out sneakers—the only things cushioning her feet after walking six miles through the torrential downpour.
"I'm sorry I'm late," Chloe choked out, her voice cracking with exhaustion and fear.
Seated in a leather armchair across the dimly lit room, Alexander Vance raised his head. His eyes were bloodshot, rimmed with a deep, haunting red, and a single tear traced down his cheek. He held a crystal glass of whiskey half-filled with melting ice, his knuckles white as he gripped it.
"It's almost 3 AM," Alexander whispered, his voice dangerously low, stripped of its usual corporate coldness.
"My phone died," Chloe sobbed, stepping forward defensively, hugging her sneakers closer to her chest as if they were a shield. "I was working late at the secondary shift, and the battery gave out. I didn't mean to worry you, Mr. Vance—"
Alexander cut her off, his gaze locking onto her shivering frame. "I thought something had happened to you," he muttered, the confession slipping out before he could build his walls back up.
Chloe paused, bewildered by the raw vulnerability in his tone. She had expected rage. She had expected to be fired on the spot for breaching the strict curfew of her live-in contract. Instead, she saw a man on the brink of shattering.
"Why are you trembling?" Alexander asked, his eyes scanning her soaked maid uniform and bare, mud-stained ankles.

Chloe swallowed hard, a fresh wave of tears spilling over. "Because I can't lose you," she whispered, the words escaping her lips in an involuntary confession of a forbidden truth.
Alexander's breath hitched. In an instant, the glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the hardwood floor, spilling amber liquid like a pool of warning blood.
