The penthouse looked entirely different. The dark, brooding shadows that once haunted the corners of the living room were gone, replaced by warm lighting, fresh flowers, and the soft sound of laughter.
Chloe sat on the balcony couch, sipping a cup of coffee while looking out over the breathtaking view of the Manhattan skyline. She was no longer wearing a maid's uniform, nor was she hiding in the shadows. As the newly instated Director of Corporate Ethics, she had earned the respect of the entire board—and more importantly, the heart of a man who had forgotten how to love.
Footsteps approached softly from behind, and a pair of warm arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her back against a familiar, solid chest.
"What are you thinking about?" Alexander murmured, resting his chin gently on her shoulder.
"I was just thinking about that rainy night three months ago," Chloe smiled, turning her head to look up at him. "When I walked in with my ruined sneakers and my dead phone. If someone had told me then that we'd end up here, I would have laughed in their face."
Alexander chuckled, pressing a soft, tender kiss to her forehead. "I knew the moment you walked through that door—even with mud on your shoes and tears on your face—that my life was never going to be the same. You saved me, Chloe. Not just from corporate ruin, but from loneliness."
