Chapter 3 - The Intruder in the Shadows"Hide," Alexander hissed, his instincts instantly shifting back to the ruthless protector he had to be in the corporate world.

"Who could it be at this hour?" Chloe whispered in panic, her heart pounding against her ribs.
"My stepbrother, Julian. He has a habit of showing up uninvited whenever he smells blood in the water." Alexander pushed Chloe gently toward the concealed service pantry behind the mahogany bookshelf. "Stay inside. Do not make a sound, no matter what you hear."
Chloe slipped into the dark, narrow space, pulling the hidden door shut until only a narrow sliver of light remained. Through the crack, she watched as the main study door swung open.
Julian Vance stepped into the room, dressed in an expensive cashmere overcoat, a smug grin plastered across his face despite the late hour. He stepped right over the shards of broken glass, chuckling softly.
"Still drinking alone in the dark, Alex?" Julian mocked, walking toward the desk. "Word is corporate profits are dipping, and rumor has it your personal life is a complete mess. The board is getting restless. They think you're losing your edge."
Alexander remained seated in his chair, his expression an impenetrable mask of absolute coldness. The vulnerability from a few minutes prior was entirely gone, replaced by the lethal predator of the boardroom.
"My personal life is none of your concern, Julian," Alexander said smoothly, his voice devoid of any emotion. "And as for the board, let them worry about themselves. If you came here to gloat, you're wasting your breath. Get out."

Julian smirked, running a hand over the back of Alexander’s leather chair. "Just checking on my dear brother. After all, if you fall, I'm the one who has to pick up the pieces. Oh, by the way... I saw someone running up the fire escape earlier tonight. Looked like a woman in a maid's uniform. Be careful, Alex. Scandals ruin empires faster than bankruptcy."
With a final mocking wave, Julian turned on his heel and strolled out of the penthouse, leaving behind a chilling aura of suspicion.
