Chapter 12 - The Secret Beneath the Floorboards

Daniel stood in the center of Mason’s bedroom, staring up at the square attic hatch in the ceiling. The house was dead quiet. Mason was safely at Caroline’s house under strict supervision, guarded by a hired private security guard Daniel had paid three thousand dollars to retain on the spot.

He set up the aluminum stepladder, the metal groaning under his weight. His mind replayed the note over and over. *Emily didn’t die with all her secrets.*

Emily had passed away from an aggressive cancer when Mason was only three. She had been gentle, artistic, and fiercely devoted. Daniel had believed he knew every breath, every dream she possessed. But after her death, grief had blinded him. When Vanessa entered his life a year later, she had presented herself as a comforting angel, a woman eager to mend their broken family. It had all been an elaborate performance to gain access to his wealth and Emily’s estate.

Daniel pulled himself up into the dusty heat of the attic. The scent of aged wood and insulation filled his nostrils. He flicked on a heavy industrial flashlight, sweeping the beam across stacked holiday bins and old furniture covered in white sheets.

He walked to the far corner where Emily’s old art supplies were stored. He knelt on the bare pine planks. Kneeling on all fours, he began knocking on the wood.

*Thud. Thud. Thud.*

Then, right beneath a dusty cedar chest: *Hollow.*

Daniel pulled a flathead screwdriver from his back pocket and wedged it between the seams of the planks. With a sickening splintering sound, the aged board popped free.

Underneath lay a metal fireproof lockbox. On top of the box was an old plush brown teddy bear—the exact toy Emily had bought for Mason before she was admitted to hospice care.

Daniel lifted the bear. His heart seized. Tucked inside the seam of the bear’s velvet vest was a small brass key.

His fingers trembled as he inserted the key into the lockbox and turned it. The mechanism clicked open smoothly.

Inside lay a legal document, a stack of handwritten letters, and an external hard drive.

Daniel pulled the top document into the flashlight’s beam. It was a certified financial ledger from six years ago, bearing the corporate seal of *Vanguard Trust Investments*. Emily had established an irrevocable family trust worth 1.4 million dollars, set aside exclusively for Mason upon his eighteenth birthday.

But what made Daniel’s heart stop was the co-executor listed on the second page.

It wasn't Daniel. Emily had created this before they updated their wills, during a brief period when her estranged brother had resurfaced. But her brother’s name had been crossed out, and written in fresh, notarized ink was a name Daniel recognized with sick horror:

*Diane Vance.*

Diane, Vanessa’s mother.

How had Diane’s name gotten onto Emily’s private documents? Emily had died months before Daniel even met Vanessa. Or so he had thought.

Daniel sank onto the attic floor, the dust swirling around him in the beam of light. A terrifying realization crept into his veins. Vanessa and Diane hadn't stumbled into his life by coincidence. They hadn't met him by chance at that coffee shop two years ago.

This had been calculated from the very beginning.
