Chapter 13 - The Broken Glass and the Warning

The sun had long disappeared, replaced by an oppressive autumn downpour that hammered against the glass windows of the living room. Daniel sat at the kitchen island, Emily’s letters spread across the granite counter like pieces of a horrifying puzzle.

The letters revealed that Emily had known Diane. Years ago, before Diane had lost her own real estate firm to bankruptcy, she had worked as a freelance financial consultant for Emily’s family. Diane had known about the secret trust. She had known the exact monetary value of Emily’s estate, down to the last penny.

When Emily fell ill, Diane had seen an opportunity. But Emily had passed before Diane could execute any transfer. So Diane had played the long game. She had sent her own daughter, Vanessa, to infiltrate Daniel’s shattered world, seduce him into marriage, and systematically break down Mason so that Daniel would eventually sign over legal guardianship of both the boy and the trust to Vanessa.

The collar. The garden party. The endless psychological abuse. It hadn't just been cruelty; it had been an orchestrated campaign to push Mason into an institution and break Daniel’s spirit.

*Crack!*

The sharp, explosive sound of shattering glass came from the rear patio.

Daniel leapt up, his hand instantly reaching for the heavy brass flashlight on the counter. Every muscle in his body coiled.

"Mason?" he whispered instinctively, before remembering Mason was miles away at Caroline’s fortified home.

He moved silently across the hardwood floor, keeping his back against the wall. The living room was dark, illuminated only by the rhythmic flashes of lightning through the French doors.

The glass pane of the rear garden door had been caved in. Cold rain blew inward, soaking the rug where Mason used to build Lego towers.

Daniel rounded the corner, flashlight raised like a weapon. "Whoever is in here, I'm armed! The police are already on their way!"

No one answered. Only the whistling of the wind through the broken glass.

Daniel swept the light across the floor. Amidst the shards of jagged safety glass lay a heavy river stone wrapped in paper.

Daniel approached cautiously, his boots crunching on glass. He picked up the stone and unfolded the damp paper.

Scrawled in red lipstick were three words:

*HEARINGS ARE TOMORROW.*

Daniel felt his breath catch. He glanced at the wall calendar. Tomorrow morning was Vanessa’s initial appellate hearing—a procedural review her high-priced lawyers had requested to appeal her four-year prison sentence.

Daniel had dismissed it as a desperate formality. But now, with the discovered trust fund and Diane operating in the shadows, he realized the break-in wasn't an attempt on his life.

It was a diversion.

He sprinted back to the kitchen island. The lockbox was still there, but Emily’s original hard drive was gone. In the thirty seconds he had spent investigating the attic earlier, or while he was distracted in the hall, someone had reached through the kitchen window sill, which now stood slightly ajar.

A shadow crossed the wet lawn outside. Daniel rushed to the window and shone the beam into the downpour.

Standing beneath the weeping willow tree near the edge of the property was a tall figure in a dark trench coat and umbrella. The flashlight caught the figure's face for half a second.

It was Diane.

She offered a slow, mocking smile, turned on her heel, and vanished into the darkness of the neighboring woods.
