Chapter 17 - The Ambush at the Courthouse Steps

The grand steps of the County Supreme Courthouse were swarming with local media. The "Suburban Collar Case" had been the biggest tabloid sensation of the year, and Vanessa’s appeal had drawn reporters like vultures to carrion.
Daniel parked his truck two blocks away to avoid the media circus. He adjusted his dark suit, the envelope heavy against his chest, and marched toward the towering granite columns.
"Daniel!" Marcus Reed was waiting by the metal detectors, sweat glistening on his forehead. "Caroline just arrived. She’s with Diane's attorneys. And Daniel... she brought Mason."
Daniel’s heart slammed against his ribs. "What?"
"She brought Mason as a 'character witness' to show the court that Mason is thriving in her care and traumatized by your unstable behavior following the trial! They filed an emergency petition for temporary custody fifteen minutes ago, citing the broken glass at your house as proof of home insecurity!"
Daniel pushed through the revolving doors, his eyes scanning the crowded marble atrium.
There, standing near the courtroom doors, was Caroline. She was dressed in an elegant ivory dress, holding Mason’s small hand tightly. Mason looked terrified, his small shoulders hunched, his eyes darting frantically across the sea of reporters and lawyers.
Beside them stood Diane Vance, looking triumphant, draped in a mink shawl, whispering venomously into her lawyer’s ear.
"Mason!" Daniel’s voice sliced through the chatter of the lobby like a blade.
Mason’s head snapped up. "Dad!" The boy tried to pull away, but Caroline’s grip tightened on his wrist, her nails digging into the boy's sleeve.
"Daniel, stay back," Caroline said loudly, ensuring the nearby journalists could hear. "You're trespassing on an active protective proceeding! You're scaring the boy!"
The cameras immediately swiveled toward Daniel. Flashes went off in rapid bursts.
"Let go of my son, Caroline," Daniel said, stepping forward with deliberate, terrifying calm. His voice didn't waver. He didn't yell. The sheer authority in his posture caused Diane’s lawyer to step back instinctively.
"He is under protective custody of his legal aunt until the judge reviews your home’s safety," Diane sneered, stepping between Daniel and Mason. "You failed to protect him once, Daniel. Now you're letting vandals break into his bedroom. You're an unfit father."
Daniel looked Diane directly in the eyes. "The vandal was you, Diane. And the hard drive you stole from my house last night? It was a decoy."
Diane’s smug expression flickered for a fraction of a second.
"What did you say?" she whispered.
Daniel reached inside his jacket and pulled out the sealed affidavit with the gold judicial seal.
"Judge Harrison signed this four years ago," Daniel said loudly, loud enough for every reporter and bailiff to hear. "It names you, Diane Vance, and you, Caroline Miller, as co-conspirators in an attempted grand larceny and fraud against Emily’s estate. And Judge Harrison is waiting inside."
Caroline’s face drained of all color. Her hand loosened.

Mason tore himself free and ran straight into Daniel’s arms.
