Chapter 18 - Behind the Courtroom Doors

Daniel scooped Mason into his arms, lifting the boy until Mason's arms wrapped tightly around his neck. Mason buried his face in Daniel’s collar, sobbing with relief.
"I’ve got you, buddy," Daniel whispered fiercely. "Nobody touches you. Ever again."
"Bailiff! Arrest this man for contempt!" Diane shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely shattering in front of the flashing cameras. "He is tampering with court evidence!"
The heavy oak doors of Courtroom 4 swung open. A senior court officer stepped out.
"Judge Harrison will see all parties in chambers. Immediately."
The room inside was cavernous and cold. Vanessa sat at the defense table in handcuffs, wearing an orange correctional jumpsuit. When she saw Daniel enter carrying Mason, her eyes flashed with cold malice, but when she saw her mother’s pale, trembling face, her smirk vanished.
Judge Harrison, an imposing man in his late sixties with sharp silver hair, sat behind the elevated bench. He didn't look at Vanessa. He looked directly at Caroline and Diane.
"Counselor," Harrison boomed, addressing Marcus Reed. "What is this urgent submission?"
Marcus stepped forward, laying Emily’s original affidavit and the DVD on the bench. "Your Honor, this is an authenticated record signed by your own office four years ago. It details a systematic scheme orchestrated by Diane Vance and Caroline Miller to defraud the trust of Emily Vance-Mercer, and to use Vanessa Vance as an instrument of financial extortion."
Vanessa gasped, turning sharply toward her mother. "Mom? What is he talking about?"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Diane hissed under her breath.
"Silence!" Judge Harrison slammed his gavel, the sharp sound echoing like a gunshot.
The judge opened the file. As he read Emily’s words, his expression grew darker, like a gathering storm. He adjusted his glasses and looked up, his gaze fixing upon Diane Vance with utter disgust.
"Mrs. Vance," Harrison said in a voice that rumbled with fury. "You were warned at sentencing that any violation of your probation would result in the immediate reinstatement of your full eight-year sentence."
"Your Honor, this is fabricated!" Diane protested, stepping forward wildly. "Emily was mentally unstable when she wrote that!"
"I signed this document in person with Emily before she passed, Mrs. Vance," Judge Harrison said, his voice flat and devastating. "I am the notary."
