Chapter 16 - The Hidden Safe in the Playroom

Daniel didn't drive to Caroline’s house. He didn't drive to the courthouse either.
He sped back to his home in Oakridge, his engine roaring as he broke every speed limit on the parkway. His mind was calculating with mathematical precision.
When Emily had designed Mason’s nursery four years ago, she had hired a custom carpenter to build a massive wooden toy chest that was bolted to the foundation wall. Daniel remembered Emily laughing on a summer afternoon, whispering: *“A mother always keeps a backup plan for her boy, Daniel. Even when she trusts the world, she keeps an anchor.”*
He had thought it was a joke about saving Mason's baby clothes.
Daniel burst through his front door, ignoring the shattered glass on the kitchen floor. He ran straight into Mason’s bedroom. He shoved the bed aside and knelt before the heavy oak chest.
He ripped out the stuffed animals, the vintage wooden trains, the board games. At the very bottom lay a false wooden panel. Daniel pressed his thumbs into the tiny circular grooves on either side, just as he had watched Emily do years ago.

The false bottom lifted.
Inside lay an old leather-bound diary and a sealed notarized envelope dated three weeks before Emily entered the hospital. On the envelope, in Emily’s beautiful handwriting:
*FOR DANIEL — OPEN ONLY IF CAROLINE TRIES TO TOUCH THE ESTATE.*
Daniel’s hands shook as he tore it open.
*“My dearest Daniel,*
*If you are reading this, my sister has proven my worst fears true. Caroline has allied herself with Diane Vance, a woman who attempted to blackmail our family years ago. I know Caroline’s resentment runs deep. She believes Mason’s trust belongs to her. Enclosed is the original, unalterable video declaration recorded before the Chief County Magistrate, along with the proof of Diane’s prior embezzlements against our family. If Caroline ever tries to claim conservatorship or use Diane against you, take this directly to the County District Attorney. Protect our son. He is the best of us.*
*With all my love, Emily.”*
Beneath the letter lay a certified DVD and a signed affidavit from Judge Harrison himself—the very judge presiding over Vanessa’s appellate hearing today.
Emily hadn't just prepared for her death. She had anticipated the wolves at the gate.
Daniel checked his watch. 1:15 PM.
The appellate hearing began in forty-five minutes.

He tucked the documents inside his jacket, locked the chest, and sprinted back to his vehicle.
