Chapter 19 - The Final Collapse of the Vance Family

Vanessa stood up from the defense table, her chains rattling violently against the wood.

"You used me?" Vanessa screamed at her mother, tears of betrayal finally puncturing her sociopathic mask. "You told me Daniel loved me! You told me that if we disciplined Mason and made him look unfit, we would control the estate together! You let me go to prison while you kept Caroline on your payroll?!"

"Sit down, Vanessa!" Diane snarled, her mask completely ripped away, revealing the bitter, desperate monster underneath. "You failed! You couldn't even control a six-year-old child without getting caught on video!"

"Bailiffs!" Judge Harrison roared, standing to his full height. "Take Diane Vance and Caroline Miller into custody immediately on charges of grand larceny, criminal conspiracy, and violation of protective orders!"

Four armed officers closed in. Caroline backed away, sobbing, dropping her designer purse to the floor. "Daniel, please! Emily would have wanted me to be safe! I'm his aunt!"

"Emily knew exactly who you were," Daniel said coldly, shielding Mason’s eyes as the officers pushed Caroline against the defense railing and clicked handcuffs around her wrists. "And you will never see my son again."

Diane fought back, screaming obscenities as two officers wrestled her arms behind her back. "You think you've won, Daniel?! You think this family is done with you?! Emily's blood is cursed! You'll never sleep peacefully in that house!"

"Get them out of my courtroom," Judge Harrison ordered with cold finality.

As the officers dragged Diane and Caroline through the side door, Judge Harrison looked down at Vanessa, who was slumped in her chair, shaking with humiliation and ruin.

"As for the defense's motion for sentence reduction," Harrison said, signing a paper with a heavy stroke of his pen, "motion denied. Sentence increased to maximum guidelines of six years based on active participation in ongoing conspiracy. Adjourned."

The gavel struck one final time.

Daniel didn't stay to watch Vanessa weep. He carried Mason out into the hallway, past the swarming journalists, straight through the glass front doors into the clean afternoon air.

Mason lifted his head from Daniel's shoulder. "Are they gone, Dad?"

Daniel kissed his son's forehead, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of the boy’s heart against his own.

"They're gone, Mason. For good."
