CHAPTER 26: SHADOWS OF THE PAST

Midnight at Pier 4 was a landscape of rust, fog, and chilling silence. Maya stepped out of her car, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She wore a heavy coat, concealing a small digital recorder and a canister of pepper spray.

From the shadows of a massive shipping container, a figure emerged. It wasn't a stranger. It was Evelyn, Thorne’s former executive assistant, who had mysteriously vanished during the Geneva trials.

"Evelyn," Maya breathed, shocked. "You're the whistleblower?"

"Thorne is tying up loose ends," Evelyn whispered, her eyes darting nervously around the foggy pier. "He ruined my life, Maya. I want him to burn." She handed Maya a sleek, silver USB drive. "This contains uncut audio recordings of Thorne bribing the zoning board, orchestrating the media attack, and buying off Dr. Aris. It's the smoking gun."

Suddenly, the blinding high-beams of three black SUVs cut through the fog, pinning Maya and Evelyn in their glare. Thorne’s private security detail. They had been followed.

"Run!" Evelyn screamed, shoving Maya toward the narrow alleys of the shipyard.

A breathless, high-stakes chase ensued. Maya sprinted blindly through the labyrinth of rusted metal and shipping containers. Heavy footsteps echoed behind her. She could hear the men communicating through radios, coordinating a perimeter to trap her.

Using her knowledge of urban evasion, Maya scrambled up a rusted ladder onto the roof of a storage warehouse. She laid flat against the freezing metal, holding her breath as flashlights swept the ground directly below her. She clutched the silver USB drive to her chest. It was the only thing keeping the Center alive. She waited for hours in the freezing mist, praying the shadows would protect her.
