CHAPTER 28: THE RECKONING

CHAPTER 28: THE RECKONING

At 8:00 AM, the emergency demolition was scheduled to begin. Marcus Thorne stood triumphantly at the front gates of the sanctuary, flanked by a phalanx of corrupt police officers and a swarm of media cameras eager to capture the sensational fall of Sophia’s empire.
Thorne raised a megaphone. "By order of the state supreme court, this property is condemned. Vacate the premises immediately, or face arrest."
The heavy iron gates slowly swung open. But it wasn't the police who stepped out. It was Sophia.
She wore a crisp white suit, exuding an aura of absolute, terrifying calm. She didn't look like a defeated woman; she looked like an apex predator who had cornered her prey. Beside her walked Maya, holding a massive, portable PA system connected to her laptop.
"We aren't going anywhere, Marcus," Sophia’s voice cut through the cold morning air, amplified for the entire crowd to hear.
"Arrest her," Thorne barked at the police captain.
"Before you do," Sophia said, her eyes locking onto the rolling news cameras, "I think the world should hear how Mr. Thorne does business."
Maya hit the spacebar.
Thorne’s own voice boomed across the sanctuary courtyard, echoing off the ancient trees and into the microphones of fifty different news networks broadcasting live. "Bribe the judge, destroy the servers... burn it to the ground."
The color violently drained from Thorne’s face. The arrogant sneer vanished, replaced by sheer, unadulterated terror. The crowd of protestors, who had been chanting against the Center just moments before, fell into a stunned, breathless silence. The police captain lowered his hand, staring at Thorne in disgust.
May you like
Thorne lunged forward desperately, trying to smash the PA system, but two honest officers immediately intercepted him, throwing him to the ground and clicking handcuffs onto his wrists. The live-stream captured every humiliating second.
Sophia looked down at the man who had tried to destroy her family. "The darkness never wins, Marcus," she said softly. "It only breaks itself against the light."
