CHAPTER 27: THE SMOKING GUN

CHAPTER 27: THE SMOKING GUN

Dawn broke like a bruised peach over the city skyline by the time Maya managed to sneak back into the estate. She was battered, freezing, and exhausted, but she held the silver drive high as she burst into the library.

Sophia and Edward had been awake all night, frantic with worry. When Maya plugged the drive into her secure laptop, the raw audio files loaded instantly. They hit 'play'.

Thorne’s arrogant, gravelly voice filled the room. "I don't care what it takes. Bribe the judge, destroy the servers, ruin Sophia’s reputation. That land is worth billions, and I won't let a bleeding-heart charity stand in my way. Burn it to the ground."

Edward closed his eyes, a profound sigh of relief escaping his lips. "We have him."

But the drama wasn't over. As Maya prepared to blast the audio to every major news outlet in the country, a horrifying realization struck her. The files were locked with a biometric encryption sequence that would self-delete in sixty minutes if tampered with. Evelyn had given them the gun, but she hadn't given them the trigger.

"It's a trap," Maya panicked, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "Thorne knew Evelyn took the files. He let her hand it over so we would trigger the wipe protocol!"

"Can you bypass it?" Sophia asked, standing over her daughter's shoulder.

"I need a backdoor code. Something Evelyn would have programmed into the encryption before she fled." Maya stared at a flashing prompt asking for a six-letter keyword. The suspense was agonizing. Time was ticking down. 45 minutes left. 30 minutes left.

Outside, the rumbling of heavy machinery grew deafening. Thorne’s legal team had secured an emergency demolition permit. The bulldozers were literally at the gates.

"Think, Maya," Edward urged gently. "What was Evelyn’s motivation? Why did she turn on him?"

"She said he ruined her life," Maya whispered. "Her daughter... Thorne's company polluted the water in her hometown. Her daughter got sick. What was her daughter's name?"

Sophia's eyes widened. "Hope. Her name was Hope."

Maya typed H-O-P-E into the prompt. The screen flashed red. Incorrect. Two attempts remaining.

"Wait," Maya said, her mind racing back to the pier. "She said she wanted him to burn. The opposite of hope."

She typed A-S-H-E-S.

The screen blinked green. ACCESS GRANTED.
