Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN IN ROOM 317

The fire cut us off from the main entrance.

Smoke rolled through the warehouse while rain blew through broken windows.

Reyes shouted for everyone to use the tunnel.

I wrapped Claire in my coat and helped her toward the stairs.

She could walk, but every step seemed uncertain.

Daniel dragged Victor behind us after an officer secured his hands.

Vanessa stood frozen near the burning shelves.

I grabbed her wrist.

“Move.”

She looked at me in disbelief.

“Why would you help me?”

“Because I am not you.”

We descended into the tunnel as part of the roof collapsed behind us.

The passage smelled of salt and old stone.

Water covered the floor to our ankles.

Halfway to the dock, Victor broke away from the officer and ran through a side opening.

Daniel followed.

Reyes ordered me to keep moving with Claire.

At the dock, harbor patrol officers waited beside two boats.

Claire held my face between her hands as though she needed to prove I was real.

“I left you with Ruth,” she whispered.

“She promised she would never tell anyone where you were.”

“She kept that promise,” I said.

“She raised me.”

“She loved you,” Claire said.

“She was my nurse in Room 317 at Silver Pines.”

The room number unlocked a memory.

Claire had spent years pretending not to recognize anyone.

Ruth smuggled me out after my birth, but Victor discovered her plan too late.

He threatened Ruth and forced her to disappear with me.

Claire survived by acting confused while secretly recording names, dates, and payments.

Six months earlier, a new nurse found Claire's hidden notes and mailed the photograph to Michael.

Victor learned about it and moved her to the winery.

Daniel returned with Victor in custody.

His face was bruised, but he was standing.

Vanessa sat on the dock with a blanket around her shoulders.

She watched her father being placed in a patrol boat.

“He told me Claire was dangerous,” she said.

“He said Emily would destroy our family.”

I looked at her.

“You hit me because you believed I was dangerous?”

“No,” she whispered.

“I hit you because I knew you were innocent and thought no one would care.”

That honesty was uglier than another lie.

Reyes informed Vanessa she was under arrest for assault, evidence tampering, conspiracy, and unlawful restraint.

Vanessa did not resist.

As officers led her away, Claire called Daniel's name.

He knelt beside her.

She touched his cheek and began to cry.

“You were a child,” she said.

“None of this was your fault.”

Daniel lowered his head.

Then Claire looked past him toward Margaret, who had just reached the dock.

May you like

Her expression hardened.

“But you were not a child, Mom.”
