Chapter 12 - FIRE AT THE OLD WAREHOUSE
Margaret stopped several feet away.
The rain soaked her hair and expensive coat.
For once, she did not look like the matriarch of Harrington House.
She looked like a mother standing before the daughter she had failed.
Claire did not allow her to come closer.
“You watched them take me,” she said.
Margaret nodded through tears.
“I thought Charles was taking you for treatment.”
“You chose to believe him because believing me would have cost you your marriage.”
Margaret had no defense.
“I was afraid.”
“So was I,” Claire replied.
“I was twenty-two, pregnant, and begging you to listen.”
The officers gave us space.
Even Victor stopped struggling long enough to watch.
Margaret admitted that Charles made her sign a statement declaring Claire unstable.
He threatened to take Daniel away and expose the family's financial collapse.
She signed.
Later, when she suspected Claire was alive, she accepted Charles's explanation because the alternative meant facing what she had helped him do.
“I told myself I was protecting the family,” Margaret said.
“You were protecting the house,” Claire answered.
“You confused the two.”
An ambulance took Claire to the hospital for evaluation.
I rode with her.
Daniel followed in another vehicle.
Margaret remained behind to give a full statement.
At the hospital, Claire asked for a mirror.
She studied my face and smiled through tears.
“You have Ruth's stubborn chin.”
“She would be proud of you.”
I told her about my childhood, my small apartment, my community-college classes, and the housekeeping agency that placed me at Harrington House.
I told her I had not entered the mansion looking for money.
I only wanted to understand why Ruth had left me the locket and the message about the portrait.
Claire squeezed my hand.
“She wanted you to find the truth when you were strong enough to survive it.”
Reyes arrived after dawn.
Victor had begun talking.
He admitted the pension theft and Claire's confinement, but he blamed Charles for everything else.
He also revealed that the forged documents were approved by three current board members and one state official.
The scandal reached far beyond the family.
Then Reyes placed a sealed evidence bag on the table.
Inside was Vanessa's phone.
A draft message had been written the night before the necklace was planted.
It was addressed to Victor.
After Emily is arrested, I will take the locket and finish what you were too weak to do.
Claire read the message twice.
“What did she mean by finish?” she asked.
Reyes unlocked a hidden folder on the phone.

The final photograph showed a man waiting beside my apartment door.
