Chapter 5 - SOMEONE CAME BACK FOR THE EVIDENCE

The police issued alerts for Victor and Vanessa before midnight.
Daniel froze Victor's company access and ordered every Harrington property secured.
I stood in the hidden room holding the payment record.
Twenty-four years.
Someone had been paying Silver Pines since the month Claire disappeared.
Margaret insisted the facility was unfamiliar to her.
Michael remembered it as a private recovery center in the mountains, but it had supposedly closed years earlier.
Reyes sent a team to the listed address.
The building was empty.
Its files had been removed.
Its sign had been taken down.
The only thing left was a fresh tire track behind the loading entrance.
Daniel wanted me to stay at the mansion under guard.
I refused.
“This began with my mother,” I said.
“You don't get to lock me in a bedroom while everyone else searches for her.”
He did not argue.
He apologized.
It was the first honest apology I had heard inside that house.
We moved the evidence to Daniel's office, where the windows were reinforced and the servers had independent power.
Michael explained the trust.
Margaret's mother had placed fifty-one percent of Harrington Holdings into a protected family trust for Claire and her children.
After Claire vanished, Charles produced documents claiming she had surrendered her shares.
Michael had always suspected the signature was forged, but Charles controlled the board, the police contacts, and the family money.
“Why didn't you fight him?” I asked.
Michael lowered his eyes.
“Because I was a coward.”
The answer hurt, but at least it was true.
At 2:13 a.m., a motion alarm sounded near the greenhouse.
Daniel and I followed the security team through the rain.
A figure in dark clothing ran between the hedges.
One guard chased the intruder toward the wall.
Another found the greenhouse door open.
Inside, the floor was covered with torn photographs and burned documents.
Someone had tried to destroy a metal lockbox but fled before finishing.
I used a shovel to knock the smoking lid aside.
Inside was Claire's hospital bracelet from the night I was born.
A second item lay beneath it.
The Harrington Star necklace.
Vanessa had not taken it to keep it.
She had brought it back to open something.
I lifted the necklace beneath the greenhouse light.
At first it looked like nothing more than diamonds around a large emerald center stone.
Then I noticed a seam in the clasp.
I pressed it with my thumbnail.
A tiny silver key slid into my palm.
May you like
On its side were two engraved words.
Union Station.
