Chapter 2 - THE NAME INSIDE THE LOCKET

My knees nearly gave out.

Daniel caught my elbow before I hit the floor.

I pulled away on instinct.

Too many people in that house had already decided they could put their hands on me.

Margaret kept staring at the photograph.

“My daughter wore that locket the night she disappeared,” she said.

“She was twenty-two.”

“She was pregnant.”

Victor cut in sharply.

“Margaret, this is grief talking.”

“You have no proof this girl is connected to Claire.”

I looked at him.

He had called me girl even though I was twenty-seven.

It was the same tone Vanessa used whenever she asked me to clean a room I had already cleaned.

Small words meant to make a person feel smaller.

Daniel ordered the mansion doors locked and called Detective Sofia Reyes, the head of the financial crimes unit.

Victor objected immediately.

That told me more than any confession could have.

Vanessa took one careful step toward the front hall.

Daniel's security chief blocked her path.

“No one leaves until the police arrive,” Daniel said.

Vanessa folded her arms.

“You cannot hold me here.”

“You were captured planting stolen property,” Daniel replied.

“You can wait twenty minutes.”

I opened the back of the locket.

Behind the photograph was a strip of paper so old it had turned yellow.

I had seen it a thousand times, but I had never understood the row of numbers written across it.

Margaret did.

She covered her mouth.

“That is Claire's trust number.”

Victor laughed too loudly.

“Any number can be copied.”

“Not that one,” Margaret said.

“My mother created the trust before Claire was born.”

“Only four people ever knew the complete number.”

A car stopped outside.

Victor's expression changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

A gray-haired attorney entered carrying a locked metal case.

Michael Grant had served as counsel to the Harrington family for almost forty years.

He looked at me, then at the locket, then at Vanessa.

“I received Daniel's emergency message,” he said.

“I also received a message from Victor telling me not to come.”

Every face turned toward the CFO.

Victor did not blink.

“There was no reason to turn a household dispute into a legal spectacle.”

Michael set the case on a marble table.

“There is every reason.”

He entered a code, opened the lid, and removed a sealed envelope marked with Claire Harrington's name.

Margaret began to cry.

Michael faced me.

“Claire left this with my office three days before she vanished.”

“She instructed me to open it only if her child ever returned to Harrington House carrying that locket.”

My hands went cold.

“I don't understand.”

Michael broke the seal.

Inside was a birth record, a handwritten letter, and a photograph of Claire holding a newborn baby.

The baby wore my silver locket around her tiny wrist.

Michael read the first line aloud.

“My daughter's name is Emily Claire Harrington.”

He looked directly at me.

“And under the original family trust, she owns controlling interest in everything bearing the Harrington name.”
