Chapter 3 - Secrets in the WallsThe ventilation shaft was a labyrinth running throughout the ancient structure of the Moretti estate. Sophia guided Lily through the darkness, relying entirely on touch and the faint echoes of gunfire above.

"Mommy, where are we going?" Lily whispered, her small hands feeling the metal walls ahead.
"To the chapel," Sophia whispered back. "The bronze key... Lorenzo said the vault behind the chapel had secondary exits. We just have to make it there."
As they crawled, Sophia’s thoughts raced back to the day she took the job as a humble housekeeper. She had come to the Moretti estate desperate for money to afford Lily's medical treatments, taking endless disrespect from Valentina just to keep her daughter fed. She had treated the estate like a ghost house, keeping her head down, until the night she overheard Valentina on the balcony speaking about "disposing of the maid's child once the shipping route documents were secured."
Valentina hadn't just been stealing money; she was running an international syndicate that trafficked in high-value extortion. And somehow, Sophia's late husband had been tied to their early operations—which made Lily a key heir to a blocked trust fund Valentina needed to unlock.
Suddenly, the duct beneath them groaned. The metal gave way with a sharp tear, and both Sophia and Lily tumbled out of the ceiling, landing heavily onto a pile of velvet drapes inside a dark, secluded room.
Sophia scrambled up, checking Lily over instantly. "Are you okay? Are you hurt?"
"I'm okay, Mommy," Lily gasped.
Sophia looked around. They were inside the inner sanctuary behind the chapel—the secret vault she had uncovered earlier that day. The heavy oak door was slightly ajar. Scattered across a massive glass table were ledgers, encrypted flash drives, and offshore account records exposing Valentina’s entire network.
Footsteps echoed outside the chapel doors.
Sophia looked around frantically for a weapon. She picked up a heavy brass candelabra from the alter table, stepping in front of Lily.
The door swung open slowly. A tall shadow stepped through the frame, gun raised.
Sophia screamed and swung the heavy candelabra with all her strength.
A strong hand caught the brass bar mid-air.

"Sophia! Stop! It's me!"
Sophia gasped, dropping the weapon. Standing before her, bleeding from a superficial graze on his shoulder but alive and breathing, was Lorenzo.
