Chapter 5 - The Final CounterplayThe room vibrated with a low, ominous rumble. Dust began to pour from the ancient stone ceiling of the chapel vault.

"He's not bluffing," Lorenzo said smoothly, examining a control panel near the vault door. "The foundation of this chapel was built over an old smuggling cavern in the 18th century. The override is real."
"Lorenzo, what do we do?" Sophia asked, holding Lily tight. "We can't let him take her!"
Lorenzo turned to Sophia, his eyes filled with absolute determination. "He thinks he's played me. He thinks I'm going to choose between my life, your life, and the evidence. He doesn't know who he's dealing with."
Lorenzo pulled out a small remote detonator from his tactical vest. "When I swept the lower catacombs three months ago, I set defensive charges along the south cave wall in case of a siege. We aren't going out through the east gate where Julian's waiting. We're going down."
"Down?"
"There's an underground drainage canal that leads straight to the marina," Lorenzo explained quickly as the ceiling cracked louder above them. "It's a tight squeeze, but we can make it."
He grabbed the satchel containing the evidence ledgers, slung it over his shoulder, and took Lily into his arm. With his free hand, he held Sophia’s hand firmly. "Trust me, Sophia."
"I trust you," she said without hesitation.
Lorenzo kicked open a heavy iron grate in the floor of the vault, revealing a steep ladder descending into the dark cavern below. "Down! Quickly!"
Sophia climbed down first, followed by Lorenzo carrying Lily. Just as Lorenzo cleared the opening, he hit the button on his remote. A controlled explosion detonated behind them, sealing the vent shaft above and blocking any pursuit, while simultaneously blowing open a side wall in the cavern that led directly to the water's edge.
Ten minutes later, the chapel above collapsed into rubble with a deafening roar, signaling to Julian Vance above that his trap had sprung.
Standing on the rocky shore of the private marina half a mile away, Julian Vance smiled as he watched the dust plume rise over the estate in the distance. "Fetch the car," he told his driver. "They're buried."
"I wouldn't be so sure, Vance," a voice called out from the shadows of the boathouse.
Julian spun around, drawing his gun, but he was instantly surrounded by a dozen armed Moretti security guards. Stepping out from the darkness was Lorenzo, soaking wet but completely unbothered, flanked by Marco and Sophia.

Julian's eyes widened in disbelief. "How... how are you alive?"
"You forgot one simple rule, Julian," Lorenzo said calmly, stepping forward and disarming Vance with a swift, practiced motion. "You brought a fight into my house. You threatened a mother and her child under my roof. And in the Moretti family, we protect our own."
