Chapter 12 - THE GHOST OF WHAT REMAINS

Peace, I learned, is fragile. Like glass held up to the sun—beautiful, until it shatters.

Two months passed. Leo recovered completely. He ran through the halls laughing again, calling my name instead of clinging in fear. Adrian and I fell into a quiet, easy rhythm—breakfast together each morning, watching Leo play in the evenings, talking late into the night about everything and nothing. We did not rush. We did not label it. We simply were.

Then the letter arrived.

It came in a plain envelope, postmarked from a city neither of us had visited in years. Adrian opened it at his desk one rainy afternoon. He read it once. Then twice. Then slowly lowered it to the wood, his face turning ashen.

“What is it?” I asked, stepping forward.

He turned the letter toward me without speaking. The handwriting was Clara’s. Or rather, a perfect copy of it. Found in a safety deposit box, dated the day before she died, and mailed automatically on a delayed timer.

*If you are reading this, I am gone. But my work remains. You think I acted alone? You think envy drove me? Foolish, arrogant Adrian. I was hired. Paid. To find the weak spot in your home. To turn Vivian into a weapon. To take Leo. And if I failed… someone else was waiting in the wings. Someone closer. Someone you trust. They used me to test you. And now that I am dead… they are coming to finish what I started. Watch your shoulder, cousin. The real snake never left the grass.*

My blood ran cold.

“She wrote this before the chase,” I whispered. “She knew she might not survive.”

“And she claims she was not the mastermind.” Adrian stood, his chair scraping loudly against the floorboards. “She claims someone else pulled her strings. Someone still inside my circle.”

“Is it a lie?” I asked. “A final blow to haunt you from the grave?”

Adrian walked to the window, staring out at the gray rain streaking the glass. “Everything Clara did… required resources. Money. Forgers. Access to private records. She had none of that. Not on her salary. Not from this house alone.”

“Which means…”

“Which means she was telling the truth.” Adrian turned to face me, his expression grim. “There is another. A third player. Hidden. Patient. Watching us celebrate a victory that does not truly belong to us.”

That night, I lay awake long after Adrian had gone to bed. I retraced every conversation. Every glance. Every strange coincidence. Clara had an accomplice. Someone who paid her. Who gave her the tools. Who knew exactly when to strike.

And according to Clara… that person was still close.

I thought of the police. The lawyers. The security chief Adrian had hired. The board members who visited weekly. The old family friends who sent flowers and congratulations.

Any one of them could be watching.

I climbed out of bed and walked to Leo’s room. He slept soundly, one fist tucked beneath his cheek. I brushed hair from his forehead, my heart aching with fear I refused to show.

Whoever you are… I whispered silently. Try him. Just try. And I will destroy you myself.
