Chapter 7 - THE TRUTH BENEATH THE LIES

The message was scrubbed away before dawn. But it lingered. In the way Adrian sometimes paused when I entered the room. In the way his gaze lingered on me, searching, whenever we spoke. Vivian had done her work well. She had planted doubt where trust should have been absolute.
Two days later, another delivery arrived. This time a thick manila envelope, sent to Adrian’s office address marked PERSONAL AND URGENT. He opened it in the privacy of his study while I waited in the hallway.
Minutes later he called me inside.
He sat behind his desk, papers scattered before him, his face pale and tight with suppressed emotion. He gestured toward the chair opposite him.
“Sit down, Grace.”
My heart sank. I took the seat. “What is it?”
Adrian pushed a sheaf of documents across the desk toward me. Employment history. Reference letters. My own résumé. But altered. Dates changed. Gaps inserted. And worst of all—a police record attached under my name, listing a charge: neglect of a minor child. Probation. Court-ordered parenting classes.
I stared at the page, stunned. “This is fake. None of this is mine.”
Adrian leaned forward, his voice low and restrained.
“It looks authentic, Grace. Seals. Court letterheads. Dates. Everything. She also sent letters to my board. To my security chief. To family friends. By tomorrow morning half the city will believe you are a criminal with a history of hurting children.”
I stood up, trembling. “It is not true. Vivian fabricated it all to destroy me. To make it look like I lied about who I am.”
“Did you?” Adrian asked quietly.
The question hit me harder than a blow. I stared at him, stung.
“Do you believe her? Over me?”
“I want to believe you.” He stood slowly, leaning across the desk, his eyes searching mine with desperate intensity. “But she knows details. Names. Places you have lived. Dates. She could not have invented all of this from thin air. Which leaves only two possibilities. Either someone gave her this information… or there is truth buried beneath the lies.”
I swallowed hard. “My past is not perfect. But I have never been charged with a crime. I have never neglected a child. And I certainly never hurt one.”
Adrian studied me in silence. Long agonizing seconds passed. Then he exhaled and leaned back.
“I want the truth, Grace. Everything. Whatever you have not told me. Whatever Vivian intends to expose. Tell me now.”
I looked at him. At the fear and doubt warring in his face. And I understood—if I held anything back now, even something small and irrelevant, Vivian would present it as proof of guilt. She had prepared this trap deliberately. She had manufactured lies that looked credible enough to make even the most trusting person question everything.
“I was married once,” I said quietly. “Years ago. It did not last. My husband… he was violent. One day he came home drunk and shook our baby girl. I grabbed her and ran. I went to the police. He was arrested. But he told people I had abandoned her. That I was unfit. Those rumors followed me. That is the story Vivian has twisted into a criminal record.”
Adrian sat very still. “You had a child.”
“I had a daughter.” My voice broke. “She died six months later. Fever. While I was working double shifts trying to keep us safe. I blamed myself. I ran away from that town. Changed my last name. Started over. I never told anyone here because… because I could not bear to speak it aloud.”
Silence filled the room. Adrian stared at me, his expression unreadable.
“Her name?” he asked softly.
“Lily.” I wiped tears from my face. “I named her Lily.”
Adrian stood and walked around the desk. He stopped before me, hesitated, then reached out and gently brushed a tear from my cheek.
“And Vivian found this,” he said quietly. “Your former husband. The tragedy. Your name change. She took your grief… and forged a criminal record from it.”
“She is using my worst memory as a weapon.” I looked up at him, terrified. “Do you believe me now?”
Adrian searched my face. Slowly the tension drained from his shoulders. He took my hands in his.
“I believe you. Because I know what loss looks like. I have seen the way you hold Leo. The way you watch him sleep. A woman who hurt a child… or lost one through neglect… does not love with the fierceness you show every day.” He squeezed my fingers. “But now I understand. This is the secret Vivian meant. She planned to reveal your past and let everyone assume the worst. To turn me against you. To destroy your reputation before I could defend you.”
“She nearly succeeded,” I whispered.
“She nearly succeeded because we kept secrets.” Adrian released me and walked back to the window. “Vivian is not working alone. To fabricate documents this convincing… to forge letterheads and court seals… she needs access to resources. Money. Connections. Which confirms what we feared—she has powerful allies.”
“Your father’s enemies.”
Adrian nodded grimly. “Whoever they are… they know everything about you. Which means they have been investigating us for months. Watching. Waiting. Planning every move.” He turned back to me, his jaw set hard. “But they made one mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“They assumed your past would drive us apart. Instead… it has bound us closer. Because now I understand why you protect Leo so fiercely. Why you stay. You lost Lily. And you are determined that no harm will ever come to another child in your care.”
He walked to the desk and gathered up the forged documents.
“We will fight fire with fire. We will disprove every lie. But first… we must be certain there are no other gaps. No other secrets they can twist into weapons.” He paused, looking at me steadily. “Is there anything else, Grace? Anything at all?”
I hesitated. One thing lingered—a feeling, a fear, something I had never spoken aloud even to myself.
“I do not think so,” I said.
Adrian studied me a moment longer. Then he nodded. “Very well. Then we fight. Together.”
But as he walked out of the study to call his lawyers, a terrible thought settled in my chest. If they knew about Lily… if they knew about my marriage and my name change… what else did they know?
