Chapter 14 - THE SECRET IN THE WILL

Adrian returned home hours later to find us sitting in silence. He listened to my aunt’s story without speaking, his face growing grimmer by the minute. When she finished, he walked to the safe in his study and withdrew a thick, leather-bound document.
“My grandfather’s will,” he said, laying it open on the table. “I have read it a dozen times. But there is a clause I never fully understood.”
He turned to the final page. Handwritten in the old man’s jagged script:
*And should the bloodline fail of pure descent, the heir shall be joined in union with the kin of the covenant. Only then shall the inheritance be secured. Only then shall the protection hold.*
My aunt leaned forward, her finger tracing the words.
“Joined in union,” she murmured. “Marriage. Between Harrington blood and your line. That is the bargain. Your ancestors saved theirs. And in return… one of yours would always belong to them.” She looked up at Adrian. “Clara knew this. She tried to force it. By killing Leo… and marrying you herself… she meant to rewrite the covenant in her favor.”
Adrian stared at me, horror dawning in his eyes.
“That is why you appeared,” he said quietly. “Why you needed a nanny. Why Vivian failed and you stepped in. It was never chance. It was the covenant fulfilling itself.”
I stood frozen, every memory rearranging itself in my mind. The day I answered the advertisement. The way Adrian looked at me. The way Leo reached for me. Not luck. Not coincidence.
A promise written in ink a century ago.
“And the third player?” I asked softly. “The one Clara answered to?”
Adrian closed the will. His jaw set hard.
“Whoever knows this secret still. Whoever understands the covenant and waits to see it honored properly. They watched Clara fail. They watched Vivian fall. And now they wait… to ensure you and I complete what was written.”
A sharp knock sounded at the door.
We all turned. Adrian walked to it, opened it slowly. A courier stood there holding a small white envelope. No return address. No name. Just Adrian’s handwritten on the front in elegant, looping script.

Adrian tore it open. He read the single line inside and went pale.
*THE BARGAIN REQUIRES A WEDDING. COMPLETE IT. OR LEO BELONGS TO US.*
