Chapter 20 - THE PROMISE KEPT

One year later.
The garden bloomed in riotous color beneath a warm summer sun. Rose bushes climbed the trellis where we had exchanged our quiet vows. The pool sparkled, safe and bright.
Leo ran laughing across the lawn, chasing butterflies, his bare feet pattering over stone. My aunt watched from the porch, smiling softly. Adrian stood beside me, his arm resting comfortably around my waist, watching his son run free and unafraid.
No threats. No shadows. No bargains. Just us.
“He is safe,” Adrian said quietly. “Because of you.”
“Because of us,” I corrected.
He turned me in his arms. His gaze was warm, steady, and entirely mine.
“Clara left us proof,” he said. “Julian left us greed. But you… you brought courage. And truth. And love that outlasts every lie ever spoken.” He lifted my hand, kissing the simple gold band on my finger. “I promised to keep you safe. I promised to stand beside you. And I swear… no one will ever threaten this family again.”
Leo ran back to us, breathless, and threw his arms around both our legs. Adrian lifted him high, holding him secure against his chest. The boy looked from his father to me and grinned.
“Can we have cake now?”
We laughed. Hand in hand, we walked back toward the house. The place that had once held so much fear now overflowed with life and laughter.
I paused on the threshold and looked back one last time. At the camera high on the wall. At the spot where Vivian once stood smiling in malice. At the shadows where Clara once hid.
All gone. Replaced by sunlight. By peace. By the quiet, certain knowledge that love had defeated every plot laid against us.
Adrian squeezed my hand. “Ready?”
I looked at him. At our son. At the family we had fought so hard to build.
May you like
“Yes,” I said. “I am ready.”
We stepped inside together. Side by side. Hand in hand. And behind us, the door clicked shut on the past forever.
