Chapter 15 - THE CHOICE

The threat was absolute. There was no signature. No way to trace it. But the meaning was clear.
Marry Adrian. Make the covenant real. Honor a bargain struck generations ago. Or lose Leo forever.
We spent the night in the study, poring over every document, every letter, every scrap of family history my aunt had brought. The covenant was binding. It had been upheld in court twice before. If a distant cousin challenged Leo’s legitimacy because the marriage clause had not been met… they could take him. And the fortune. And everything Adrian had spent his life building.
“They have been waiting all along,” Adrian said, rubbing his face with both hands. “Testing. Watching. Letting Clara and Vivian weaken us. So that when the real demand finally came… we would have no choice but to obey.”
“Marry you… to save Leo,” I said quietly.
Adrian looked up, his expression raw. “I will not do it, Grace. Not like this. Not under duress. Not because a piece of paper demands it. We will fight. We will find who sent the letter. We will expose them. We will burn the covenant to ash before I force you into a marriage you do not choose freely.”
“And if we cannot find them?” I asked. “If they hide in the shadows and strike at Leo again and again? Poison. Kidnapping. Accidents. For the rest of his life?”
Adrian fell silent. He looked toward the door, where Leo slept safely for now.
“I will not use you as a sacrifice,” he said.
“You would not be.” I stepped closer, heart hammering. “Because the truth is… I have already chosen this. Long before the letter arrived. Long before I knew about the covenant.”
Adrian stilled.
“I chose you,” I whispered. “I chose Leo. I chose this family. And if marriage is what keeps him safe… what keeps us together… then I do not see it as a bargain. I see it as the life I was already going to ask you for.”
Adrian stared at me, his eyes glistening. He reached out and brushed his fingers gently along my cheek.
“You do not know what you are saying,” he said brokenly. “You do not know what darkness comes with this name. With this bargain.”
“I know who I am choosing to walk through it with.” I covered his hand with mine. “Marry me, Adrian. Not because they demand it. But because we are already bound. By courage. By grief. By love. And let us stand together… and face whatever comes.”
Adrian pulled me close and held me so tight I could barely breathe. He pressed his face into my hair. For a long time he said nothing. He just held me.

Then he whispered against my forehead.
“Yes. I will marry you. And together… we will hunt them down. And we will end this bargain once and for all.”
