Chapter 10 - A Life Built on Truth
That evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a magnificent golden light over the Connecticut hills, Evan sat on the porch steps watching the stars begin to twinkle overhead.
The house behind him was warm, filled with soft music and the comforting sounds of dinner being prepared.
Grace walked out onto the porch, wrapping a thin shawl around her shoulders against the cool night breeze. She sat down beside Evan on the stone step.
"The kids are washed up and getting ready for bed," Grace said softly, looking out at the peaceful gardens. "Caleb insists that the puppy sleeps in his room tonight."
"I'll talk to him about that," Evan chuckled gently. "Though I'll probably lose the argument."
They sat in comfortable silence for a long moment, listening to the crickets humming in the pine trees.
"Evan?" Grace asked softly.
"Yeah?"
"Do you ever regret going back into the dirt that day? In the beard and the old clothes?"
Evan looked over at her, his dark eyes filled with deep, rock-solid sincerity.
"It was the hardest eleven days of my life," Evan said quietly. "Watching my children suffer while I waited for the right moment. But if I hadn't kneeled in that dirt, I wouldn't have seen who Vanessa really was... and I wouldn't have seen the brave woman who stood up to protect my daughter."
He reached out his hand, his large, scarred fingers gently wrapping around Grace’s smaller, warm hand. Grace didn't pull away; she leaned her head softly against his shoulder.
"There are no more secrets in this house, Grace," Evan whispered into the quiet night. "No more disguises, no more fear, and no more two sets of rules."
"Just one rule," Grace smiled softly, looking up at his handsome, serene face.
"What's that?"
