Chapter 5 - The Trap in Bridgeport

While the children slept under Grace's watchful eye at the ridge house, Evan sat in the underground tactical office beneath the main estate.

Marco laid out three satellite maps of the Bridgeport port authority district.

"Vanessa’s brother, Julian Vale, caught wind of the estate lockdown an hour ago," Marco reported. "He’s currently at their private warehouse at Pier 14, trying to pack up three crates of unregistered bearer bonds and flee to Canada on a private charter boat."

Evan swirled a glass of scotch, his eyes dark. "Julian was the one who supplied Vanessa with the pediatric sedatives, wasn't he?"

"Yes," Marco confirmed, dropping a pharmacy ledger onto the desk. "Julian runs a crooked pharmaceutical supply line out of the docks. He’s been supplying black-market drugs across the state for three years."

Evan stood up, pulling a heavy black overcoat over his shoulders. "We finish this tonight, Marco. I want the Vale family entirely erased from Connecticut by sunrise."

Thirty minutes later, three black SUVs pulled up to the fog-shrouded docks of Pier 14. Rain began to fall, slicking the concrete containers and reflecting the red lights of the shipping cranes.

Inside Warehouse 14, Julian Vale was frantically throwing duffel bags into the back of a luxury speedboat docked inside the internal slip. His face was soaked in cold sweat.

"Hurry up, you idiots!" Julian yelled at two dockworkers. "Load the bonds! If Whitaker’s men get here—"

The heavy steel roll-up doors of the warehouse blew inward with an explosive BANG.

Smoke cleared to reveal Evan Whitaker stepping through the wreckage, surrounded by eight armed enforcers.

Julian dropped his duffel bag, pulling a snub-nosed revolver from his jacket with trembling hands. "Whitaker! Stay back! I swear to God I'll shoot!"

Evan didn't even pause. He walked straight toward Julian, his hands in his coat pockets, completely ignoring the gun pointed at his chest.

"You gave my three-year-old son sedatives, Julian," Evan said, his voice echoing off the corrugated iron walls like thunder.

"She... she asked for them!" Julian stammered, backing toward the boat edge. "It was Vanessa! She said the kid was too noisy!"

Evan reached Julian in three long strides. Before Julian could pull the trigger, Evan caught his wrist, twisted it back until the bone snapped with a sickening crack, and disarmed him in a single fluid motion.

Julian screamed, falling to his knees on the wet dock floor.

Evan grabbed Julian by his collar, lifting the grown man off his feet with one hand, suspending him over the churning, icy water of the boat slip.

"Your sister is going to spend the next twenty years in a federal prison for wire fraud, child endangerment, and theft," Evan whispered into his ear. "And you... you're going to give the Federal Prosecutor every single name in your drug ring before I decide whether to drop you into this harbor."

"I'll talk! I'll talk!" Julian wept, clutching his broken wrist. "Just don't kill me! Please!"

Evan dropped him onto the concrete floor like a sack of trash.

"Lock him in the trunk," Evan ordered Marco. "Deliver him directly to the FBI office in Hartford with the pharmacy ledgers. Let them clean up the rest."
