Chapter 9 - The Roses Bloom

Six months later, spring returned to the Whitaker estate in full force.
The rose garden—the very garden where Evan had kneeled in the mud with faded denim and a fake beard—was exploding in brilliant shades of crimson, pink, and white.
In the center of the lawn, Caleb was chasing a golden retriever puppy that Evan had bought him for his fourth birthday, his laughter echoing through the trees. The brown rabbit with the blue-stitched ear was sitting safely on a nearby wooden bench, no longer a shield against terror, but a beloved toy resting in the sun.
On the patio, Sophie sat at a white wrought-iron table, painting a watercolor landscape of the gardens. She looked healthy, her cheeks rosy, her dark-blond hair tied up in a bright yellow ribbon.
Evan stood near the rosebushes, wearing a simple linen shirt, holding a pair of real pruning shears. He wasn't pretending anymore; he had taken up gardening as a genuine hobby, finding peace in tending the flowers with his own hands.
Grace walked out onto the lawn, carrying a tray of fresh lemonade. She wore a light floral dress, her hair tumbling softly over her shoulders, her face completely healed, glowing with health and happiness.
"Dad! Look!" Sophie called out, holding up her painting. "I painted the rosebushes!"
Evan set down his shears and walked over to the table, leaning down to look at her artwork. The painting showed the grand estate, the bright red roses, and four figures standing hand-in-hand in the sun: Evan, Sophie, Caleb, and Grace.
Evan felt a profound warmth fill his chest—a feeling he thought had died three years ago when his wife passed away.

He looked up at Grace, who was smiling down at the painting, a faint blush rising on her cheeks as she noticed herself in the family picture.
"It's beautiful, sweetheart," Evan said, kissing Sophie’s forehead. "It's the best painting in the house."
