Chapter 8 - The Public Reckoning

Three days later, the news broke across every major media outlet in New England.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office announced a fifty-count indictment against Vanessa Vale and Julian Vale, charging them with grand larceny, international wire fraud, illegal prescription drug distribution, and felony child endangerment.

The high-society circles that Vanessa had worked so hard to impress turned their backs on her instantly. Her boutique memberships were revoked; her family's social standing vanished overnight.

In the Hartford Federal Courthouse, Vanessa was led out in handcuffs, wearing a plain orange jumpsuit, her head bowed to avoid the flashing cameras of fifty reporters.

From the top of the courthouse steps, Evan Whitaker stood watching her departure. He wore a crisp dark suit, flanked by Marco and his legal team. He didn't look triumphant; he looked relieved. The nightmare was officially closed.

As the police transport van pulled away, a lead reporter from The Hartford Courant pushed a microphone toward Evan.

"Mr. Whitaker! Is it true you posed as a groundskeeper on your own estate to gather evidence against your fiancée?"

Evan looked directly into the camera lens, his expression calm, powerful, and utterly devoid of fear.

"I didn't pose as a groundskeeper to gather evidence," Evan stated clearly, his voice broadcast to millions across the state. "I did it to protect my children. And to anyone who thinks they can touch a child in my city and hide behind wealth or influence... let this be your warning."

He turned away from the press, walking down the steps toward his private car where Marco was holding the door open.

"Where to, Boss?" Marco asked.

Evan smiled—a bright, clear smile that reached his eyes. "Home, Marco. I have a tea party in the garden at three o'clock."
