Chapter 2 - The Enforcers Arrive

Before the high-society guests could process what was happening, the gates burst open. Twelve men in immaculate black three-piece suits stepped out of the vehicles, led by Marco Rossi—Evan’s chief lieutenant and the most feared enforcer in the tri-state area.

They moved with terrifying precision, fanning out across the terrace, blocking every exit, every staircase, and every glass slider leading into the main house. The photographers dropped their heavy lenses; the local politicians tucked away their cigars, their faces pale with sudden dread.

"Boss," Marco said, stepping up beside Evan and bowing his head respectfully. "The perimeter is locked down. No signals leaving the estate. Cell jammers are active."

Vanessa’s eyes darted frantically around the ring of armed men. "Marco! Arrest her! Arrest this housekeeper! She struck me!"

Marco didn't even look at her. He kept his eyes on Evan, waiting for the command.

Evan turned to his guests—the mayors, the judges, the philanthropists who had spent the afternoon drinking his expensive wine and smiling at Vanessa’s fake perfection.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Evan announced, his voice carrying clearly across the silent courtyard. "My charity brunch is officially over. My estate security will escort you to your vehicles. If any photograph, video, or rumor from this morning leaves your lips before tomorrow morning... I will consider it an act of hostility against the Whitaker family."

He didn't need to raise his voice. Every person on that terrace knew what a "hostility" from Evan Whitaker meant. Within ninety seconds, the terrace was cleared of guests, leaving only Evan, his children, Grace, Marco, his enforcers, and Vanessa.

Vanessa stood isolated in the center of the marble floor, her expensive cream-colored dress ruined by orange juice, her perfect hair unspooling in the breeze.

"Evan... please," Vanessa whimpered, her confidence crumbling into raw panic as she realized no one was left to protect her vanity. "I love you. I loved those children. I was doing it for them! I was preparing them to be Whitakers!"

Evan walked over to the stone table where Vanessa’s designer handbag lay. He picked it up, turned it upside down, and dumped its contents onto the marble floor.

Along with diamond lipsticks and gold compacts, three small glass vials rolled across the stone—pediatric sedatives.

Grace gasped from behind Evan. "That's what she put in Caleb's milk every night at eight... to make him sleep so he wouldn't cry for his mother."

Evan stared at the vials. A vein throbbed violently along his jawline, but his expression remained terrifyingly calm.

"Marco," Evan said softly.

"Yes, Boss?"

"Take my children and Grace to the secondary guesthouse on the north ridge. Have my personal physician inspect Sophie’s wrist and Grace’s face immediately."

"No!" Sophie cried out, clutching Evan’s trousers. "Daddy, don't leave us!"

Evan knelt down again, taking Sophie's small, bruised wrist into his massive, gentle hands. He kissed her knuckles softly. "I'm not leaving, sweet girl. I'm just cleaning up the house. Go with Grace and Marco. I'll be up in twenty minutes to read you a story."

Sophie looked into his eyes, searching for the terror that had haunted her for eleven days, and found only the absolute protection of her father. She nodded slowly, taking Caleb’s hand.

Grace looked at Evan, her jaw set with quiet resilience. "Thank you, Mr. Whitaker."

"No, Grace," Evan said, looking her dead in the eye. "Thank you. You bled for my family today. You will never want for anything again."

As Marco escorted Grace and the children away, Evan turned back to face Vanessa.
