Chapter 10 - The Dawn of a New Legacy

Marcus didn't hesitate. He ripped the bottom drawer of his desk open, pulling out a heavy-caliber firearm and slamming a fresh magazine into the grip with a sharp clack.

"Julian, secure the perimeter doors!" Marcus barked, sprinting toward the study door. "Call the state police back—tell them we have an active trespasser on the property!"

Heart pounding against his ribs, Marcus sprinted down the dimly lit corridors of Cole Manor, his heavy leather shoes pounding against the polished hardwood floors. The memory of Victoria's threats flashed through his mind. Even with Victoria behind bars and Richard in custody, the tentacles of the Sterling-Cole cartel ran deeper than he had ever imagined. There were mercenaries still on the payroll, operatives who hadn't received the stand-down order.

He rounded the corner of the west wing, his breath catching in his throat.

The door to the nursery was wide open.

Inside, the room was in chaos. The bedside lamp had been knocked over, its bulb shattered against the rug. A tall, bulky figure dressed entirely in black tactical gear was standing beside the crib, holding a muffled, squirming bundle in his arms.

"Drop the child!" Marcus roared, bursting into the room, raising his firearm directly at the intruder's center of mass.

The operative spun around, caught completely off guard, but before he could raise his own weapon, a sudden blur of motion erupted from the shadows near the wardrobe.

Elena didn't hesitate. Armed with a heavy brass floor-lamp, she swung it with all her strength, smashing it directly across the operative's helmeted head with a deafening crash.

The man staggered backward, losing his balance and dropping the blanketed bundle onto the thick carpet.

Marcus closed the distance in a fraction of a second, lunging forward and tackling the operative to the floor, driving the butt of his gun hard against the man's temple. The operative went limp instantly, knocked unconscious.

Chest heaving, Marcus pushed himself up off the floor and scrambled across the rug. He scooped up the bundle, peeling back the blanket.

Little Leo blinked up at him, startled and whimpering softly, but completely unharmed.

Marcus pulled his son tightly against his chest, his hands trembling with a raw, overwhelming surge of relief. He looked up. Elena was standing against the wall, breathing heavily, her hands shaking as she dropped the broken lamp to the floor.

"Are you hurt?" Marcus asked urgently, rushing over to her and inspecting her arms for any sign of injury.

"I'm... I'm fine," Elena gasped, tears of shock and adrenaline spilling over her lashes. She looked down at the unconscious intruder on the floor, then up into Marcus's eyes. "Who... who sent him? I thought it was over."

"It is over," Marcus said softly, his voice hardening with an absolute, unshakeable promise as he wrapped his free arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against his side alongside their son. "This was the last ghost. No one will ever hurt either of you again. I swear it on my life."

Outside the tall nursery windows, the dark Manhattan sky began to fracture at the edges, bleeding into a brilliant, golden streak of dawn. The long, dark night of lies, blackmail, and corporate war was finally over. As the first rays of morning light flooded the room, illuminating the quiet sanctuary they had fought so desperately to protect, Marcus knew that the true legacy of Cole-Vance Global wasn't the towers of steel and glass downtown, but the family standing right here in the light.
