Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Sterling Global

The silence in the forty-second-floor boardroom was absolute, broken only by the hum of the climate control system and the ragged, shallow breathing of Richard Sterling. The chairman’s face had gone from mottled red to a sickly, ashen gray. His trembling fingers hovered over the edge of the rosewood table as if searching for something to anchor him to reality, but his allies had already physically distanced themselves from his chair.

Beatrice Thorne cleared her throat, breaking the suffocating tension. She looked past Richard directly at Marcus, her expression a mix of deep respect and lingering shock.

"The motion for an emergency leadership review is formally withdrawn," Beatrice announced, her voice ringing clear across the room. "Furthermore, in light of the criminal conspiracy uncovered by the internal audit, I move that Richard Sterling be stripped of his position as chairman of the oversight committee and permanently banned from all Cole-Vance Global properties."

"Seconded," the two remaining board members chorused almost in unison, eager to dissociate themselves from a sinking ship.

Richard slammed his palms onto the table and tried to stand up, his voice cracking with desperate rage. "You can't do this! You're destroying a fifty-year partnership! The market will crucify this company by noon!"

"The market will react to accountability, Richard, not your manufactured panic," Marcus said, his voice flat and unyielding. He turned to his brother. "Julian, escort our former chairman out of the building. And make sure federal marshals are waiting for him at the ground-floor security desk. He has a family reunion waiting for him at the precinct."

Julian stepped forward with a cold, humorless smile, grabbing the back of Richard's chair and hauling him upright. Richard spat curses, thrashing uselessly as Julian dragged him backward toward the heavy double doors. As the oak panels slammed shut behind them, cutting off Richard's frantic threats, the atmosphere in the room shifted entirely.

Marcus turned back to the remaining board members, his presence commanding absolute authority. "The restructuring of Cole-Vance Global begins immediately. We will issue a public press release within the hour detailing the termination of all ties with Sterling Global and the purging of compromised personnel. If any of you have objections, now is the time to voice them."

Not a single person spoke. Beatrice Thorne merely nodded approvingly. "Do what needs to be done, Marcus. Save the company."

Four hours later, Marcus stood on the private balcony of his executive office, looking down at the endless flow of Manhattan traffic far below. The digital news tickers scrolling across the buildings opposite his window were already flashing the headline: STERLING-COLE MERGER COLLAPSES AMID FRAUD SCANDAL; MARCUS VANCE CONSOLIDATES CONTROL.

His encrypted phone vibrated against his palm. He pulled it out and tapped the screen. It was a secure text message from the state police precinct upstate.

> “Victoria Sterling has refused all legal counsel and is demanding a direct meeting with you. She claims she has information regarding the origin of the firm's founding capital that could destroy both of you.”

Marcus stared at the words for a long moment, a cold, calculating spark igniting in his eyes. He slipped the phone back into his pocket, turned away from the balcony, and walked back inside to prepare for his final confrontation with his wife.
