Chapter 3 - The Attorney's Gambit

The heavy silence that fell over the second-floor hallway felt thick enough to suffocate. The operative froze mid-step, his large hands awkwardly supporting the baby carrier containing a now-screaming Leo. Victoria spun around, her triumphant smirk instantly evaporating, replaced by a mask of sheer panic.
"Marcus," Victoria stammered, her voice losing its manic edge and turning thin and brittle. "Put the gun down. You're out of your mind. We're just... we're taking the boy to a private pediatrician. He had a fever—"
"Shut your mouth, Victoria," Marcus snarled. His voice wasn't raised, but it vibrated with a cold, lethal intensity that made even the seasoned private security operative take an involuntary half-step backward. Marcus’s eyes were locked entirely on the man holding his child. "If you take one more step toward that staircase, I will put a hollow-point bullet through your knee. Drop the carrier. Now."
The operative looked from Marcus's dead-eyed stare to the barrel of the gun, then glanced sideways at Victoria for instructions.
"Don't listen to him! He's bluffing, he's an officer of the court!" Victoria shrieked, panic overriding her caution. "He wouldn't dare risk a murder charge in his own—"
Click.
Marcus cocked the hammer of the firearm with a sharp, unmistakable sound. "Try me."
The operative didn't wait another second. With a swift, practiced motion, he unbuckled the straps, gently lowered the baby carrier onto the carpeted hallway floor, and raised his hands in the air, stepping back against the wall.
Elena, still bruised and shaken from where she had been shoved against the dresser, crawled out of the nursery doorway on her hands and knees. She scrambled across the floor, diving over the carrier and pulling little Leo tightly against her chest, sobbing as she rocked him back and forth to calm his frantic cries.
Marcus kept his pistol trained on the operative, but he spared a brief, agonizing glance down the hallway toward Elena and his son. A flicker of immense relief crossed his hard features before his gaze snapped back to his wife.
"Mr. Vance, we have a problem downstairs," a deep voice boomed from the end of the corridor.
Julian Vance, Marcus’s younger brother and the head of the firm's internal security division, rounded the corner of the stairwell, flanked by two armed estate guards. Julian looked at the tense scene, took in the operative pressed against the wall, and gave a grim nod.
"We locked down the perimeter gates, Marcus," Julian said, stepping forward. "Nobody is leaving this property tonight. And I checked the server room downstairs. Victoria didn't just drain your personal accounts; she attempted to wipe the firm's central database using an administrative backdoor code provided by Sterling Global."
Victoria’s face drained of all color. The last vestiges of her composed, untouchable heiress facade crumbled completely. She staggered back against the nursery door frame, clutching her chest.
"That's a lie," Victoria whispered, shaking her head frantically. "The board... the board voted to remove you! You don't control the firm anymore!"
"The board voted under the assumption that I was incapacitated," Marcus said coldly, lowering the gun just an inch but keeping his stance rigid. He signaled to Julian with a nod. "Julian, take this hired thug down to the holding room in the basement. Call the local detachment of the New York State Police and have them execute the warrants for corporate espionage and attempted child abduction."
"Right away," Julian said, grabbing the operative by the tactical vest and hauling him backward down the hall despite the man's muffled protests.
As the heavy footsteps faded down the stairs, Marcus finally lowered the firearm entirely, sliding it back into a concealed holster beneath his arm. He walked slowly toward the nursery door, kneeling down on the carpet right beside Elena and the crying child.
He didn't look at Victoria. He reached out, his hand trembling slightly as he gently touched the baby's tiny blanket.
"Elena... are you alright?" Marcus asked, his voice rough with suppressed emotion.
"I'm... I'm okay," Elena whispered, wiping a tear from her cheek with the back of her hand, holding Leo securely against her heart. "He just shoved me. The baby is safe, Mr. Vance. He's safe."
Marcus let out a long, shuddering breath, then slowly stood up to his full height. He turned his eyes toward Victoria, who was now trembling violently against the wall, trapped in the wreckage of her own conspiracy.

"Pack your things, Victoria," Marcus said, his voice quiet, final, and absolute. "When the state troopers arrive in ten minutes, you won't be leaving in a squad car as a grieving mother. You'll be leaving as a criminal defendant facing twenty years in federal prison."
