Chapter 9 - The Last Ghost in the Safe

The private study of Cole Manor was dark, illuminated only by the green-shaded banker's lamp sitting on the edge of the massive oak desk. Marcus stood behind the desk, breaking the heavy wax seal on a thick, manila envelope bearing the official emblem of the U.S. District Attorney’s Office.

Julian Vance stood nearby, arms crossed, watching his brother pull a stack of faded, yellowed legal documents from the envelope.

"What is it, Marcus?" Julian asked, breaking the silence. "More fallout from Victoria's arrest?"

"No," Marcus murmured, scanning the crisp typewritten lines of a document dated nearly thirty years ago. His eyes widened slightly as he processed the names printed at the bottom of the page. "Julian... look at this. This isn't about Victoria or her uncle. This is about our father's original partnership agreement when he first acquired this estate."

Julian stepped closer, leaning over the desk to read the visible text. As his eyes scanned the signatures, his breath hitched. "That's... that's impossible. That name was wiped from firm records before we were even in law school."

"It seems our father didn't build this firm entirely from scratch," Marcus said, a grim realization dawning in his voice. "The initial land grant and seed capital for Cole-Vance Global didn't come from a bank loan or a silent investor. It came from a trust established by Elena's grandfather."

Julian stared at his brother in stunned silence. "Elena's family? But I thought she was just an ordinary maid who—"

"That's what Victoria's family wanted everyone to believe," Marcus interrupted, his mind racing as past puzzles suddenly clicked violently into place. "Five years ago, before Elena was hired, her family's assets were systematically dismantled through a series of fraudulent corporate bankruptcies orchestrated by Arthur Cole and Richard Sterling. They didn't just steal a company, Julian. They stole her family's entire legacy, left her an orphan, and then drove her into a corner where she had no choice but to work under an assumed name just to survive."

The heavy silence in the study became oppressive. All the pieces of the puzzle—Victoria's irrational, murderous hatred toward Elena, the strange coincidences surrounding the estate's founding, and the deep-seated paranoia of the old guard—suddenly made brutal, logical sense. Victoria hadn't just attacked a random employee; she had been trying to eliminate the rightful heir to the very empire Marcus was now running.

Before Marcus could speak another word, the intercom on his desk buzzed loudly.

Mrs. Gable's voice crackled through the speaker, breathless and laced with absolute panic.
