Chapter 2 - THE CASE THAT ALREADY EXISTED Grace was taken to the hospital with a fractured shoulder.

Nathan expected the police to arrest Victoria.
They didn't.
Instead, an emergency family-court petition appeared before the judge.
It accused Grace of kidnapping Lily.
It claimed Grace intended to flee the country.
It claimed she had manipulated Nathan.
The filing had been submitted at 8:23 that morning.
The attack had happened after noon.
Nathan stared at the timestamp.
“They filed this before Victoria was attacked.”
His attorney, Marcus Hale, nodded.
“Which means today's confrontation was anticipated.”
Grace looked at him from the hospital bed.
“They always plan ahead.”
Nathan's anger collided with something deeper.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For Lily.
A social worker named Dana Ruiz entered with the child.
Lily clutched a stuffed rabbit.
“Is Mommy in trouble?”
Nathan crouched.
“Your mommy is hurt. That's all.”
“Are they going to take me?”
“No.”
Nathan said it too quickly.
Grace looked at him.
“You can't promise that.”
“I already did.”
Later, DNA samples were collected.
Nathan watched every seal, every signature, every step.
He needed proof.
Not because he doubted Grace.
Because he was beginning to understand that truth meant nothing against a machine built to manufacture lies.
Then Marcus discovered something worse.
A bank account in Grace's name contained $250,000.
Airline tickets had been purchased from it.
The account had been opened using the signature of Helen Ward.
A notary who had been dead for two years.
Victoria sent Nathan a message.
YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT GRACE REALLY DID.
Then came a video.
It showed Grace five years earlier.
Pregnant.
Standing beside Charles Cole.
Charles handed her an envelope.
She accepted it.
Victoria's message appeared beneath the video.
SHE WAS PAID TO LEAVE YOU.
Nathan looked at Grace.
“Tell me what really happened.”
Grace stared at the screen.
“That envelope was empty.”
“Then why did you take it?”
“Because your father told me it contained the only evidence that could save my brother.”
Nathan's face hardened.
“What evidence?”
Grace whispered:
“There wasn't any.”
The hospital corridor suddenly felt very cold.

Someone had spent five years constructing two versions of Grace.
And only one of them would survive court.
