Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO KEPT THE COPIES Rose's cottage had been destroyed.

Furniture overturned.
Files ripped apart.
A wall safe emptied.
But Grace found something hidden behind a painting.
An old cassette.
A note addressed to Nathan.
Tell him his father lied twice.
They found an old cassette player at a truck stop.
Charles's voice emerged through static.
“The first lie is that Grace accepted money to leave Nathan.”
Grace closed her eyes.
“She did not.”
“The second lie is that Grace signed away her child.”
Nathan leaned forward.
“She did not.”
The original custody waiver had never been signed.
Charles had forged it.
But he had kept the original.
And Rose knew where.
The recording ended with a clue.
The place where Nathan first chose Grace over me.
Nathan remembered.
St. Anne's Hospital.
Five years earlier, he had chosen Grace over a business dinner ordered by his father.
They drove there before dawn.
But when they arrived, they discovered something horrifying.
A coat belonging to Rose had been found beside a river.
No body.
No proof of death.
Just another carefully staged disappearance.
Grace whispered:
“They want us to believe she's dead.”

Nathan looked at the dark river.
“Then we believe nothing until we see the truth.”
